A new update has arrived on the Nintendo Switch, and it appears that Nintendo is preparing the original console for Switch 2 compatibility, featuring enhancements such as Virtual Game Cards, Game Sharing, and more.
The update fans have been anticipating is finally here. Nintendo Switch firmware version 20.0.0 was released today, introducing several tools and functions previously teased in this year’s Nintendo Direct presentations. The much-anticipated Virtual Game Cards and Game Sharing features have been added, and system icons have also received a notable refresh.

In addition to the previously mentioned functionality, such as console Game Sharing, Nintendo has introduced the ability to transfer system settings from the original Switch console to its successor via the system menu. This is to prep the original console for the Switch 2 launch on June 5. Pre-order information has also already gone out, and fans will need to receive an invitation
to pre-order a Switch 2 console. Below, we have detailed all the features added to the original Switch.

- The Virtual Game Card icon has been added to the Home Menu. Virtual Game Card allows users to see the physical representation of their digital titles on screen. This includes DLC and downloadable software, and users can virtually load and eject virtual game cards between up to two Nintendo Switch systems. Virtual Game Cards can also be shared between all members of a Switch Account Family.
- The GameShare icon has also been added to the Home Menu screen. GameShare allows users to share one copy of a title between two or more Nintendo Switch 2 systems. The feature can only be used from the initial Switch 2 console and it lets Switch owners play together via local wireless. TYhe Switch 2 must initiate GameShare, previous models of the Switch (like the OLED and Lite) can’t use GameShare without a Nintendo Switch 2 on board.
