Original Dragon Quest Trilogy Coming To Nintendo Switch Next Week

The first three games of the famous Japanese role-playing game series Dragon Quest are coming to the Nintendo Switch.

On September 27th, 1986’s Dragon Quest, 1987’s Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line, and 1988’s Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation will be available on the Nintendo Switch. Originally, when they came to the U.S., the games were titled Dragon Warrior. The games are delightfully cheap, with Dragon Quest selling for $4.99 USD, Dragon Quest II for $6.49 USD, and Dragon Quest III at $12.49 USD (roughly $24 USD for the whole set). You can probably guess this yourself, but it’s been a while since Dragon Quest’s oldest entries graced American shores; the last worldwide release was in late 2014 on Android and iOS, and the North American releases before that were on the Game Boy Colour in 2000 and 2001.

This set has already been out on Japanese Switches for just over a month, so some were fearing that this announcement would not come. Thank goodness it did, as it would be insane for Square Enix not to capitalize on the Hero’s presence in Smash (which DQ3’s elevated price may owe something to) and Dragon Quest 11’s imminent Switch re-release. I don’t know if I have room in my life right now for a full-length traditional RPG, but this is bound to please a lot of people, and hopefully make some new fans. And if you’d rather play Pokemon instead, guess what? Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland Retro has been announced for Switch, and is due out digitally on September 17th in Japan. We’ll probably see that one on our shores pretty soon.

Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest II, and Dragon Quest III will be out on North American and European Nintendo Switches come September 27th. Let’s set a course for adventure, and hope that the rest of the series can come forward!
