Separate from the main campaign, 3D Realms developer Anshar Studios is excited to reveal a new roguelike game mode coming to Painkiller called Rogue Angel.

The new game mode is based on the roguelike genre, which means players can try the crucible thrown at them from Painkiller‘s enemy waves and boss fights over and over from the beginning. Following a roguelike genre mantra of ‘no two runs are the same,’ Rogue Angel takes players to a new realm of Purgatory, where a team of three can advance through procedurally generated arenas, collect tarot card boons, find new powerful weapons, pick up helpful items, and ultimately take on epic bosses. 3D Realms has released a new trailer for Rogue Angel, and it can be seen below.

CGMagazine’s preview of 3D Realms’ Painkiller, says, “The good news is that moment-to-moment gameplay and, more importantly, the gunplay in Painkiller feels true to form, ditching modern FPS conventions, such as aim down sights or fleshed out parkour mechanics, opting instead for a fast, frenetic and pure shooting experience that will be familiar for fans of the original or the boomer shooter genre in general,” giving the revamped experience high praise, and 3D Realms is seeking to expand that experience with the new Rogue Angel game mode coming to the title with the official title launch on October 21.

  • Players can jump, hook, and perform acrobatic parkour moves across vast biomes while fighting nightmarish enemies. Returning fans will notice an array of new and classic Painkiller weapons to maim enemies with.
  • It’s dangerous to go alone, so fans can play online with up to two friends to face off against terrifying Painkiller enemies.
  • Players will come face to face with a variety of horrifying foes, from hordes of demons to titanic terrors like the monstrous children of Azazel – the Nephilim.
  • During each run, players can use tarot cards to upgrade abilities (like boons in Hades 2), rank up to expand player arsenals, and coordinate tactics with other players to obliterate all foes.
  • Play as one of four distinctive characters – Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch – with unique character perks to boost stats unique to each character.

The Standard and Deluxe Editions of Painkiller are available to pre-order now on digital storefronts and will release on October 21 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC (via Steam). More information can be found on the 3D Realms website.
