Battles and More Battles!

Pokémon Champions Is Coming To Nintendo Switch On April 8, With Free-To-Start Model

The Pokémon Champions release date is now set in stone, and it will land on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on April 8. This Pokémon title won’t require payment to start.

That’s right, not only is Pokémon Champions right around the corner, but the title is launching with the same live-service model previously deployed by Pokémon Unite. Fans will not have to pay up front to play the new Champions title. Just like Unite, Pokémon Champions will be entirely battle-focused, and while it will be available on both Switch consoles, a free update at launch for Nintendo Switch 2 adopters will add improved visual performance. Nintendo has deployed a trailer showcasing battles, which can be seen below.

Unlike standard Pokémon fare, Pokémon Champions is built entirely around battling other players. It uses the same core systems fans already know (so Pokemaniacs will have knowledge built in), and strategy will be key to triumphing over opponents. Matches take place in Single Battles or Double Battles with teams of six Pokémon (as usual). Like other games in the series, mid-battle decisions will decide the outcome of a bout. Switching into favourable matchups, when to use Mega Evolution, and timing when to use your moves play a big role in how matches unfold.

Pokémon Champions will include several online modes, starting with Ranked Battles that track your performance against similarly skilled players. Like in Legends Z-A, trainers will carry a ranking with them, and it will matter when using matchmaking systems online. On the other hand, Casual Battles remove win-loss pressure, and Private Battles let trainers set up private matches using IDs. Trainers can bring past partners into Pokémon Champions through Pokémon HOME, as well as recruit Pokémon from within the game itself.

It’s worth noting that although the base Pokémon Champions game is free, optional purchases are available. The Pokémon Champions + Starter Pack bundle includes expanded storage, extra tickets for team building, and a music track from Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! A Premium Battle Pass and Membership system will also be offered (just like Pokémon Unite), but these will carry a cost. More information regarding Champions and its many systems can be found on the official Pokémon website.

Pokémon Champions launches on April 8 for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles.
