Professor Layton and The New World of Steam Brings the Series to PlayStation and PC For the Very First Time

In the company’s latest livestream, Level5 announced that Professor Layton and The New World of Steam will be coming to PS5 and PC, in addition to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions. This marks the first time the series has ever made its way to a PlayStation system, as well as PC.

Level5 also recommitted to putting the game out in 2026, although we still don’t have a release date. A new trailer was shown off during the stream as well, revealing new details and features of the series’ ambitious return.

Whereas previous games mostly used a visual novel story format mixed with puzzles, The New World of Steam will feature full 3D environments for the very first time in the series. Layton and Luke can walk around the streets of the American city, Steam Bison, exploring the world from a first-person point of view — although similarly using arrows to move around scenes like previous games.

The game will feature full 3D cutscenes and mouse support across all platforms, except Nintendo Switch. Apparently, it also features the “most puzzles” in series history, with puzzle design by Quicknock. Joe Hisashi of Studio Ghibli fame will compose the soundtrack. Level5 also shared a cast of characters and the Japanese voice actors.

  • Professor Layton – Yo Oizumi
  • Luke – Mio Imada
  • Elinora & Elida – Riho Yoshioka
  • Eggmuffin – Mahiro Takasugi
  • Allinston – Shiny Kote
  • Sheriff Bobsley – Koichi Yamadera
  • Falcon – Akio Otsuka
  • Mystella – Michaela Wako Sato

The last mainline entry in the franchise, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, was released all the way back in 2013 on Nintendo 3DS. We have, however, seen a few spinoffs in that time, including Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (2012) and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy (2017).
