Sony Has Reportedly Made Deep Cuts to PSVR 2 Development

Sony has reportedly made significant cuts to its development in virtual reality, with only two games currently in development for its PSVR 2 headset.

The report comes courtesy of Android Central, which claims that Sony has little interest in investing more resources into VR. A source close to Android Central says that there will be “very few opportunities for VR game development at Sony going forward,” while another source says that there are only two first-party titles in development for the headset.

There could, of course, still be third-party games released, but a lack of software from Sony itself certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in the future of PSVR 2.

The timing of the report is interesting, considering Sony plans to release a PC adapter for PSVR 2 on August 7, allowing players to use the headset without a PS5. The adapter will cost $59.99, but also requires a separate DisplayPort cable that is compatible with DisplayPort 1.4. You’ll also need a Steam account and a PC that meets the minimum requirements.

Despite support coming to PC, things haven’t looked great for PSVR 2, and this makes the picture even more grim. Earlier this year in March it was reported that Sony had stopped producing new PSVR units, amid a “surplus” of unsold units that weren’t moving. Sales numbers aren’t easy to find, but according to tracking firm IDC, the estimate of PSVR 2 units sold was at 1.69 at the end of 2023. The system’s biggest game was also arguably the one it launched with, Horizon: Call of the Mountain.

It should also be noted that Sony has made cuts elsewhere this year, and has been part of the mass layoffs that have plagued the video game industry. In February Sony Interactive Entertainment laid off 900 employees, which made up roughly eight percent of its workforce.
