Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake "Still In Development," Claims Saber Chief Creative Officer

It’s been five long years since the announcement of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, and in that time, we’ve not seen a single trailer or even substantial info on the game. But apparently, the remake is still in development, according to Saber.

In an interview with IGN, Saber Interactive Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits provided an extremely brief update, simply saying, “Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say.”

While it’s always nice to hear a project hasn’t been cancelled, the simplicity of Willits statement doesn’t exactly shed any light on the state of the game.

Originally announced in 2021, the KOTOR remake was, at first, being helmed by Aspyr Media, the studio behind a multitude of Star Wars remasters, including Republic Commando, The Force Unleashed, and the somewhat of a mess Star Wars Battlefront: Classic Collection.

But a report by Game File in December 2025 revealed that Aspyr had been pulled off the project, and development was now being led by Mad Head Games — the studio behind Hellraiser: Revival. Mad Head is owned by Saber, while Aspyr remains a subsidiary of The Embracer Group, following Saber’s split to become an independent company. All of this also came after the debacle with the Restored Content Mod of KOTOR II, where Aspyr promised a full release of the mod on Switch, before ultimately having to backtrack on those promises and not deliver it.

Even more interestingly, however, Game File also claimed there are plans for a full remake of KOTOR II as well, codenamed Juliet. Although we don’t know the current state of that.

This all comes at an interesting time for Star Wars games, with Disney putting more emphasis on gaming adaptations than ever before. The third Jedi game is currently in development, Star Wars Galactic Racer and Zero Company are set to release within the next year, and a brand new Old Republic game, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, led by Mass Effect director Casey Hudson, was announced at The Game Awards 2025. That certainly makes it seem like a prime time for the KOTOR remake, if the troubled project can ever see the light of day.
