The Strategy Series Is Heading to a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Total War: Star Wars Reportedly In Development

According to a report from DualShockers, Total War: Star Wars is one of three new Total Wars games in development at series developer Creative Assembly as of October 2023.

At the moment, it’s unclear which of these three games is taking priority or what the themes of the other two are. Creatively Assembly has traditionally released a new Total War game annually, with the exception of skipping 2014 and 2021. This means we could see Total War: Star Wars in the next couple of years or have to wait even longer.

The last game in the series was 2023’s Total War: Pharaoh, which was headed by Creative Assembly Sofia based in Bulgaria. Pharaoh is a more grounded entry that sticks to the historical inspiration without introducing fantastical elements.

Of course, Total War does have precedence for adapting sci-fi franchises, with three Total War: Warhammer entries. Those games still use the grand strategy systems the series is known for while integrating Warhammer civilizations and elements.

While Creative Assembly is best known for its strategy series, it’s also the developer behind Alien Isolation. It was working on Sega’s multiplayer shooter Hyenas before its cancellation, resulting in layoffs.

Following layoffs, Sega said Creative Assembly would go back to the genres it knows best. “To put it simply, Creative Assembly was good at offline games in the RTS genre, but they took on the challenge of developing Hyenas, an online game in the FPS genre,” said Sega Sammy CEO Haruki Satomi.

Star Wars itself is the perfect fit for real-time strategy, with the grand galactic conflicts and various factions. We also know of another Star Wars strategy game in development from EA and Bit Reactor.

Star Wars has had a handful of strategy games in the past, including 2001’s Galactic Battlegrounds from Age of Empires developer Ensemble Studios and Petroglyph’s 2006 release Star Wars: Empire At War.
