Just one day after Xbox revealed that Starcraft was coming to Xbox Game Pass, a new report has been released alleging a shooter was in the works at Blizzard Entertainment.
With Jason Schreier’s upcoming book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, news has already surfaced ahead of the Oct. 8 launch, and it has been reported that Blizzard is making a third attempt at developing a shooter based on the lore and mythos of StarCraft. This news comes shortly after the TGS 2024 Xbox Games Showcase revealed StarCraft, and its sequel will be coming to Xbox Game Pass. The shooter is reportedly being led by former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay, who joined Blizzard Entertainment in 2022. Schreier discussed this claim on IGN’s Podcast Unlocked when asked about it by editor Ryan McCaffrey.

McCaffrey brought up a statement from Schreier’s book in the podcast interview. The passage reads, “Most of the developers were laid off, while a few would remain with Hay to begin incubating, of all things, a new StarCraft shooter.” Schreier responded with, “If it’s not cancelled. I mean, that’s strong — this is Blizzard, after all; their history with StarCraft shooters is not good.” Schreier then claimed his new book wasn’t meant to reveal new news or “drop scoops” but was intended to report on what happened during the recent Blizzard Entertainment controversy and the events that unfolded.
It’s worth mentioning Blizzard Entertainment has not released a new StarCraft title since StarCraft: Remastered in 2017, so any news of a new entry in the franchise could be of interest to die-hard fans of the RTS series. While Blizzard hasn’t had the strongest history with developing shooters based on the StarCraft universe (this is the third reported attempt), there’s still hope for continued development if the title hasn’t been cancelled, as Schreier suggests.
Play Nice: The Rise, Fall and Future of Blizzard Entertainment releases on October 8.
