Marvel has announced a new ongoing series that will see the original Captain America returning as the star spangled avenger.

When Captain America #1 is launched in July it will see writer Ed Brubaker (Captain America) and artist Steve McNiven (Civil War) teaming up for Steve’s return.

“I gave myself a few challenges for this new #1 – I wanted to do the perfect Cap comic for anyone who walks out of the Cap movie and wants to know what’s next, but it also had to build on everything I’ve done on the book beforehand, too, and feel like the natural next step,” said Brubaker in a press release. “Thank God Brevoort wrangled me Steve McNiven to pull all this off. Steve is at the top of his game, and no one draws action like him. I can’t wait for these issues to start coming out.”

Currently the title of Captain America belongs to James “Bucky” Barnes, Steve’s WW2 sidekick, while Steve is in charge of America’s security. The current Captain America storyline sees Bucky under trial for actions he committed while he served as a Soviet assassin known as the Winter Soldier, although the story hasn’t finished yet, so Bucky’s fate is still unknown.

The new ongoing will see a mysterious figure from Steve’s past returning with deadly secrets, which will send shock waves through the life of Steve and everyone he knows.

Captain America #1 will be released in July, the same month as the Captain America movie, Captain America: The First Avenger.  It will prove a good jumping on point for those who see the movie and want to know more about Marvel’s first Avenger.
