Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct: They Finally Brought Yoshi!

Nintendo announced that a Nintendo Direct was dropping today, and it has given another look at the Super Mario Galaxy Movie before it hits theatres.

Two days ago, Nintendo revealed that a Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct is happening today, and it’s finally here. New details have been shown about the sequel to the Illumination-headed Super Mario film, and it looks like it’s picking up right where the first film left off, after the defeat of Bowser in Brooklyn. In case you missed it, the entire Direct is below.

Presented by the Legendary Shigeru Miyamoto, the direct led straight into the titular bros heading to a mysterious cave in the sand, a location familiar to anyone who’s played Super Mario Odyssey. An inverted pyramid in the Sand Kingdom (expressed by the small Tostarenans at the entrance). At the entrance (where Mario pops an impressive nollie on a motorcycle), they don Fire Flowers to see in a dark sewer. This is where the Super Mario Galaxy Movie introduces a Mario character that has yet to be seen in film; they found a green Yoshi (who talks!), finally confirming his appearance in the film.

Birdo is also making (a less friendly) appearance, by raining eggs on a parasol-equipped Princess Peach. Throughout the whole sewer exploration, a remix of the Super Mario Bros. Underground Theme (first featured in level 1-2 of the NES Super Mario Bros.) can be heard throughout the new look at the film, a solid touch by Illumination. The whole new trailer is based around the introduction of Yoshi; however, in one particular scene, Yoshi is seen squaring up against a T. rex, with Baby Mario and Luigi in the background held by Toad. Which begs the question, why are they babies?

While the trailer gave fans a whole lot of Yoshi, Rosalina and Luma were missing in action, and no reason has been given for the Bros’ baby stature (nor voice actor for Yoshi). Yoshi, Toad, and apparently Baby Mario and Luigi will be hitting the screens in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie on April 1.
