On Monday, Nintendo held a Super Nintendo World Direct to showcase the theme park’s first expansion into Donkey Kong Country.
Nintendo decided to pull back the curtain on Monday to reveal the latest expansion to its Super Nintendo World theme park. In the 12-minute video, legendary game developer, producer and designer of Donkey Kong himself, Shigeru Miyamoto, briefly walked fans through what the theme park expansion currently teases, including a trip through Donkey Kong’s Banana Hoard and a chance to meet Donkey Kong in person (or in costume). The video can be seen below.
The new expansion captures everything a visit to the country in Super Nintendo World might look like, with lifelike versions of everything Donkey Kong fans can recognize at a glance. Donkey Kong’s tree hut, the banana hoard and even hidden K-O-N-G letters are scattered around for visitors to find.
Super Nintendo World also houses the 1984 original Donkey Kong, as well as the character Cranky Kong, who can be found in his iconic wooden rocking chair. The entire Donkey Kong Country wing of Super Nintendo World is filled with music from the series. The theme from the original Donkey Kong Country game can be heard during a Kongo rhythm game Miyamoto played alongside staff, with other hit music from legendary composers David Wise and Eveline Fischer also playing in the background throughout the video.
Shigeru Miyamoto said “Donkey Kong made his debut 40 years ago, it was the first arcade game I’ve created” continuing with “and now, thanks to the incredible talent at Universal Creative, the world of Donkey Kong has come to life in the real world and can be experienced firsthand.”
Super Nintendo World’s Donkey Kong Country will open on Dec. 11 this year at Universal Japan. Next year, Universal’s Epic Universe will launch its own Donkey Kong Country at a to-be-determined date. Fans can visit the official Nintendo website for more information.
