Tencent Acquires Supercell For Nearly $9 Billion 1

Chinese internet titan Tencent Holdings have sealed the deal on the purchase of Finnish mobile game company Supercell Oy, creators of Clash of Clans.

Tencent has been in discussions with SoftBank group, a Japanese telecommunications group who are the sole external shareholders of Supercell. Tencent will be purchasing just over 84% of stake in the company, according to the Wall Street Journal. This amounts to $8.6 billion, valuing Supercell at $10.2 billion.

The purchase of Supercell from SoftBank will occur in stages, stated in the WSJ article. Tencent is apparently still talking with co-investors to hop in on the purchase of Supercell, but as stated in the article, since the purchase is taking place in stages, they have sufficient funds to cover the cost of the initial purchase.

SoftBank originally purchased 51% of stake in Supercell back in October 2013 for a reported $2.1 billion.
