Nintendo announced that the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda is delaying the film’s launch by moving it a couple of months.
This was not the worst news to come out on the upcoming live-action adaptation. Nintendo announced that the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie is delaying the film’s launch by moving it a couple of months. Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto made a quick post stating the production change. The movie was set to arrive on March 26, 2027, and will now arrive on May 7th, 2027. Surprisingly, this was the original date Avengers: Secret Wars was supposed to come out.
“This is Miyamoto,” the statement reads. “For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.”
Even though Nintendo did not specify why they moved The Legend of Zelda movie’s release date, but shows them capitalizing on the MCU delays. On a similar strategy, they likely escaped competing with other major March movie drops. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is slated to release on March 19, 2027, up there with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Either way, 2027 looks to be a stacked year of some big IP films.
Production and announcements were initially slow to begin with. The first announcement of a live-action The Legend of Zelda film was made in a November 2023 report, where they set the movie’s release date for “202X.” This gave game franchise fans hope that the film would drop within the decade. As of writing, the movie only has Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) tapped as the director and Derek Connolly (Jurassic World: Dominion, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu) writing.
Recently, it was reported that the recent Cuckoo and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes star Hunter Schafer was eyeing the titular role of Princess Zelda. However, recent reports pointed out that Schafer might be cast in an upcoming Marvel project. No casting has been confirmed yet, and the story details are still unknown.
The Legend of Zelda film would be the next major IP video game adaptation to follow the widely successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie, classified as the biggest video game film adaptation ever. The Mario film already has a sequel planned to release sometime in April 2026.
