The LEGO Gameboy Is Real & It Shows a Modern Take On a 1989 Classic

After months of fan speculation, teasers, and leaks, the LEGO Game Boy has finally been revealed, and it showcases a modern build of a classic console.

After unveiling the LEGO x Game Boy team-up on an Instagram post in January, fans have gone wild on the internet over the potential of the upcoming LEGO set. Thankfully, the wait is over, and today, the LEGO Gameboy has been thrust into the spotlight by a LEGO Instagram post, and it’s up for pre-order. The Lego Game Boy will be released on October 1, cost $59.99, and will include 421 pieces. On top of that, the new build-your-own-Gameboy comes with two interchangeable cartridges for The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Super Mario Land.

Like every other LEGO set based on consumer electronics (like the previously released LEGO Creator series), the LEGO Gameboy is sadly unplayable, but the 421-piece model does come with functionality. The LEGO Game Boy is nearly a 1:1 replica of the 1989 original, and features a fully pressable set of buttons, including the +Control Pad, A and B buttons, and Select and Start.

Alongside the only two games that will likely ever release for the newest version of the Game Boy, LEGO has included corresponding lenticular screens to show scenes from The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Super Mario Land, or a vanilla Nintendo start screen. The Nintendo start screen lenticular allows users to manipulate the image, making it appear to have a rolling Nintendo logo, similar to the original Game Boy. This isn’t the first set from these two Nintendo franchises, as The Great Deku Tree and a Mario Kart set have already been converted to bricks before the Game Boy.

Once the 421-piece set is constructed, fans will be able to display their new creation on an included stand, showcasing Nintendo’s history. The new LEGO Game Boy set is now available for pre-order on Amazon for $59, with shipping starting on October 1, 2025. Fans can find more information regarding the new console set on the official LEGO website.
