The Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct is here, and today it has given fans a release date and shown new gameplay coming to the islands.
Two days ago, Nintendo revealed that a Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct is happening today, and it’s finally here. In the Direct presentation, new details were shown about the sequel to the Tomodachi Life Nintendo 3DS game that came out way back in 2013, and it looks like it’s picking up right where the first left off. Today’s broadcast comes just days after a whole different Nintendo Direct focused on the Super Mario Galaxy Movie just happened this week.
Hosted by Nintendo producer Yoshiaki Koizumi, the presentation gave fans a look behind the curtain at the latest entry in the Tomodachi series, and it’s shaping up to expand on everything fans loved about the original. All of the details seen in the Direct can be seen below.
Everything Revealed at the Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Direct!

- In Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, players can fully customize Mii characters as family, friends and more. The player experience can differ based on the Miis you create as residents, so the experience could be different for everyone. Embracing a promise they made years ago, Nintendo said Tomodachi Life would be more inclusive, and they’ve delivered with new options in the creation menu.
- There are two ways to create Mii characters as residents: Choose “Get Help” to answer questions about their facial features and form the Mii that way, or “From Scratch” to get under the surface and choose from various face types, hairstyles, eyes and more. After, you can customize their name, height, body type, gender, voice and aspects of their personality. Miis aren’t limited to being just human, they can also be teddy bears and aliens – you can even give them favourite phrases and personality quirks!
- Once created, Miis will need some help starting out, and this is where the player comes in. Players can embody a god, and literally drop Miis near each other to influence social situations, and different scenarios might play out: They may discuss their favourite foods or bond over their love of fine painting. Once acquainted, the Miis will be able to interact on their own in downtime. You can also have up to eight residents live together as roommates, and they’ll react differently when sharing a home than when meeting on the street.
- In Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, players can visit multiple shops and facilities on the island. Miis can discover their favourite foods at the food mart; pick up a range of everyday outfits at the cheekily named Where & Wear clothing; revamp rooms and living spaces at T&C Reno home supply, and much more!
- Create a wide range of elements at the Palette House Workshop to further spruce up island life. Players can design pets for Mii characters, draft up custom drinks, sketch a resident’s favourite TV show, decorate clothing, and more with the new creation options included in Living the Dream, and this workshop can even be used to decorate the island.
- Players can make the Island theirs, and change up the island’s aesthetic with landscape items like trees, plants, benches, vending machines, and even bouncy playground rides and more. The sky’s the limit when setting up your Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream island.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launches for Nintendo Switch on April 16, and it will also be playable on the Nintendo Switch 2 system (although no expanded features for that console have been revealed at this time).
