Twitter Hangs In Limbo After Elon Musk Demands “High Intensity”

Since Elon Musk purchased Twitter, the company has changed immeasurably, and some employees are calling it quits.

Elon Musk continues to go utterly nuclear on his newest acquisition company. His signature brand of leading Twitter since it fell under the Elon umbrella has been unstable, with his iron ruling monocracy-based style not sitting well with employees and partners alike. Due to the outspoken nature of his threats and sporadic behaviour that follows — starting off his relationship by sacking literally half of the staff — Twitter staff have reportedly refused to be a part of “hardcore Twitter.”

Memes of Twitter burying itself aside, on Wednesday, The Washington Post revealed Musk’s plans to move forward with the social media brand, detailing a threat directed at employees to the tune of “Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.” Musk’s actions thus far:

  • Massive layoffs since acquiring the social media platform for a cool $44 billion.
  • Rectifying ‘some’ of the employee firing by re-hiring a few of the recently cut staff to remain at the company.
  • A very public confrontation with an employee via Tweet thread was met with swift firing on the site for all users to see.
  • Launching ‘Twitter Blue,’ which allowed $8 a month access to verified blue checkmarks, that have already angered companies like Nintendo and Eli Lilly, causing advertisers to abandon ship.
  • Constant Tweets from Musk about how the site has record-breaking visits.

The email obtained by The Verge, has Musk demanding “extremely hardcore” production moving forward. “Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore. This will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.”

Musk goes on to say, “Twitter will also be much more engineering-driven. Design and product management will still be very important and report to me, but those writing great code will constitute the majority of our team and have the greatest sway. At its heart, Twitter is a software and servers company, so I think this makes sense.”

The culmination of all the chaos at Twitter is enough for some employees to hang their gloves up in emotional outpour posts on the site they’ve cultivated for years:

There are Tweets from users that blatantly suggest switching platforms from the Twitter, to older platforms such as Tumblr, to the point of what appears to be the official Tumblr account posting “hold up like 12 new ppl joined. we’re working on it. give it a sec :)” in regards to the influx of users. It’s worth noting Tumblr was trending right below #RIPTwitter, on Twitter’ Now Trending’ section late last evening.

Surely through all of the chaos that has happened over the two young weeks since Elon Musk purchased Twitter, there will be more news surrounding the website very soon, and the future seems bleak for the blue bird.
