On Tuesday, rumours have circulated suggesting a Valve Steam console featuring an AMD RX 9070 GPU to compete with Xbox and PS5 is in the works.
The Valve Steam Console rumour blew up from renowned Spanish leaker extas1s, who initially echoed the owner of HandleDeck.com’s post that claimed Steam is building a console to rival the Xbox and PS5. Wccftech translated the Spanish-speaking video into passages that infer the Steam console’s existence, and according to the information presented, the new device is set to use the same AMD RDNA 4 GPU architecture used in the new Radeon RX 9070. The video with these details can be watched on extas1s YouTube channel.
The translated details state: “It turns out that Valve is openly working on drivers for the AMD 9070 graphics cards. These cards are currently designed exclusively for desktop devices. The AMD 9070s are the first to feature RDNA 4 technology and FSR 4. So yeah, that’s the scoop! This RDNA 4 architecture is currently designed only for desktops.”
The quote continues: “It’s expected that, many years down the line, it might make its way to portable devices, but right now, it’s strictly desktop. Valve is already working on it; in fact, from what my friend has heard, Valve is putting a lot of effort into the drivers for these RX 9070 GPUs with RDNA 4. And the question he raises in his tweet, which we all might be wondering, is why Valve is so interested in collaborating on this.”
It concludes with: “It looks like Valve might be considering AMD’s 9070 graphics card as the main core for their desktop console,” while also suggesting that the drivers could potentially be developed for other purposes.
While it is possible Valve could be looking into developing a Valve Steam console or a successor to the Steam Deck, it is equally possible for Valve to be working on methods to get their SteamOS (or Linux) to work smoothly on modern RNDA 4 GPUs. As always with rumours, fans should take all information presented with a grain of salt until the information is proven by Valve or unless they address these rumours.
