Respawn Head Vince Zampella Confirms Major Changes for Next Battlefield Title

This week, Vince Zampella, head of Respawn Entertainment, revealed new details about EA’s next Battlefield title and confirmed it will feature modern warfare.

The last game in the series, referred to by fans as 2042, launched to poor audience scores, with Metacritic giving it a 2.2. CGMagazine’s review of the previous release called it “messy and unrefined,” citing that “specialists do not smoothly recreate the roles that so defined previous classes” and that everything feels more or less the same.

Fortunately for fans, according to Zampella, the biggest complaint about the latest entry—the specialist system—appears to have been removed.

Battlefield 2042

While speaking to IGN this week, Vince Zampella revealed a slew of details about the new Battlefield entry, including the removal of the specialist system, which followed the framework of Rainbow Six: Siege.

Zampella wasn’t involved in the development of 2042, so he said, “I don’t know what the rationale was, but for me, it’s like the team tried something new. You have to applaud that effort. Not everybody liked it, but you’ve got to try things. It didn’t work. It didn’t fit. Specialists will not be coming back. So classes are kind of at the core of Battlefield, and we’re going back to that.” regarding the removal of the class system replacement, which many fans would sigh in relief at.

Zampella also mentioned the peak of Battlefield was during the Battlefield 4 era, when “everything was modern,” and said the team at Respawn Entertainment is aiming to recapture the success of those more modern Battlefield games. He also noted that the team already has “well-designed play spaces” that he can’t wait to show fans. Lastly, Zampella touched on the rocky launch of Battlefield 2042 and emphasized that their goal is to avoid a repeat of that.

The new Battlefield title is still a work in progress, and more information will be revealed as the team at Respawn Entertainment sees fit.
