With the remastered version of the original Warhammer 40K: Space Marine out this week, fans have taken to the internet to drag the title for its messy release, while others have called it a ‘cash grab.’
Warhammer 40K fans have been eating well on the video game front lately. Aside from free updates being doled out for existing titles like Darktide and Space Marine 2, a new remastered version of the original Warhammer 40K: Space Marine – Master Crafted Edition launched this week for fans who want to revisit Captain Titus’ original journey on newer hardware. This release has now faced backlash from fans on nearly every platform since launching on June 10.
Over on Reddit, users have posted a thread titled “Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Master Crafted Edition is a mess” where fans have gone to detail their issues with the newest Warhammer 40K video game release. One fan bluntly calls the title “just a shameless, blatant cash grab thanks to the success of SM2” and other fans have become frustrated over game-breaking bugs. Some fans have even suggested the previously released Anniversary Edition in 2021 plays better than the just released Master Crafted Edition.
Over on the Steam platform, Master Crafted Edition sits with a “mostly negative” reception. Many of the fans on that platform have said the same thing about the Anniversary Edition‘s superiority, suggesting fans should buy that version of the game instead due to the price of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine Anniversary Edition being just $7 (Anniversary Edition has since climbed back up to $39.99) in comparison to Master Crafted charging $39.99 out of the gate.
Fans who are playing Warhammer 40K: Space Marine – Master Crafted Edition on Xbox however, are touting the title’s prowess. One review says “One of my favourite classic Xbox 360 games. We cooking Xbox lets go keep dropping these remastered gems” and another review doesn’t get the hate the title is receiving. Looking at the differences in platforms will show Xbox Game Pass users are granted access to Master Crafted Edition with their subscription to the service, other platform users have to pay $39.99 for admission. As of this post, fans don’t believe Master Crafted Edition is worth the price.
So far SEGA and Relic Entertainment have yet to respond to the backlash surrounding Master Crafted Edition.
