The studio behind Warhammer 40,000: Darktide has announced that there will be an entirely new game mode added to the game in an upcoming update.
Expeditions is the newest way for players to experience the grim dark by going outside of the Hive City of Tertium. The way they explained how this was possible, even though the in-game lore has stated that it’s basically impossible to survive outside of the city, is, of course, because of chaos. Chaos cultists named The Admonition were sighted looking for lost tech-remnants outside of the city walls, which means that players have to come in and deal with it.

With Design Director Victor Magnuson describing this update as “the biggest injection of new content in the game since launch,” players will be glad to know that he is not bluffing. The new gamemode is a timed experience where players will have to be quick and deadly with their actions in the waste. With the goal of looking for tech remnants and investigating locations on the map, players will fight against an increasingly deadly coterie of enemies. It’s basically a rogue-like; every run is different, and every successful run unlocks more missions.
While outside the hive, the player will be susceptible to every chaos spawn and monster knowing their position. As a result, loadouts will need to be changed frequently depending on which enemy is attacking and where they are attacking from, because the game mode happens in an open field. A stark change from the enclosed corridors and maze of metal, while inside the Hive City. Apparently, this gamemode is so tough that it’s only available to characters halfway through their character progression.
Staying outside the walls is never really safe; nowhere is in the Warhammer universe. Hazards outside include twisters, lightning storms, and a polluted atmosphere, which severely limit your ability to move around. Players have the chance to come upon a safe zone, which will temporarily provide a haven from the monstrosities outside, but if one step is taken outside, then it’s back to all holds barred combat. The good news is that there are upgraded weapons to fight back against the warp, one of which is the Modified Grenade, which obliterates all enemies but also draws more to the location it was thrown.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide – Expeditions is capped off by a variant of the Ogryn Pack Master who can be found roaming the plains with his pack of Pox Hounds and Armoured Pox Hounds. Removing him from the battle quickly is the best option, as he will continually summon more hounds to his side. The plus is that he is very loud, so at least players can skirt by if they don’t want an all-out fight.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide – Expeditions will release on March 17th, 2026, for every advanced player to enjoy. If you want more details about the update, then check out the developer blog.
