Both the Ys and Trails franchises have come a long way, with the latter seeing a whopping three games releasing in the West in 2025 alone. But it turns out there’s also, sort of, a fourth game — as Refint/Games has announced Ys vs Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga will launch Summer 2024 on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Alternative Saga is a crossover fighting game that mashes together Nihon Falcom’s two major franchises. It’s similar in concept to something like Super Smash Bros. or Dissidia Final Fantasy.
The game originally released on PlayStation Portable in 2010, and it honestly seemed like there’d never be any kind of released outside of Japan — especially considering, at that time, North America wasn’t even getting mainline games like Trails From Zero. Here’s the official description of Alternative Saga,
“Legends unite as characters from the Ys and Trails series come together in a historic crossover RPG!
Join Adol Christin, Estelle Bright, and other beloved heroes as they embark on a journey to restore the lost land of Xanadu and face the looming threat of the Dragon King!”
This version contains updated visuals and new voice acting from both series’ current actors.
2025 is proving to be a defining year for Falcom’s efforts to bring its series to the West. NIS America localized Trails Through Daybreak 2 back in February, and the franchise’s next mainline entry, Trails Beyond the Horizon, is set to launch this Fall. Meanwhile, GungHo is bringing over the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter remake in September.
With Alternative Saga, the West will be fully caught up with Japan on Trails.
