Nintendo’s next step into the world of feature films finally has a date, as the live-action The Legend of Zelda will hit theatres on March 26, 2027.
The date confirmation comes from the recently released Nintendo Today! app, which was announced at the very end of this week’s Nintendo Direct presentation. And this clearly proves that Nintendo has big plans for the app, delivering exclusive news through it.
Nintendo Today is a free app that chronicles any upcoming Nintendo events and releases and gives you an amalgamation of different facts and features on your feed every day. When you first open the app, you can pick which Nintendo franchises you’re interested in, and you’ll get a curated feed based on those. For example, in addition to that Zelda news, you might have an Animal Crossing comic, Kirby quiz, and trailers from the Direct. The app is available on both iOS and Android.

The Legend of Zelda movie was first announced by Nintendo in November 2023 and is being made in collaboration with Sony Pictures. Few details have been revealed so far, and the biggest question—casting—has yet to be announced. However, it has been confirmed that the film will be directed by Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and produced by Avi Arad and Shigeru Miyamoto.
Ball has made a few comments about his hopes for the film, namely that he wants it to be a “live-action Miyazaki.” Hayao Miyazaki is the famous director and founder of Studio Ghibli, behind films like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro. The director told Entertainment Weekly in December 2023, “We’re not just doing it because we can, we want to make something really special.”
In addition to Zelda, Nintendo also has a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie in production, expected to release in 2026.
