At five years old, my thoughts were simple and enthusiastic, summed up as “cool, big weapons,” and that was enough to spark a lasting interest. From there, I became a fan of the entire franchise, spanning strategy games, the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and even the occasional offbeat spin-off. I consumed as much Three Kingdoms content as I could find.

It introduces new fictional scenarios, adds a Gem-based progression system for officers, and debuts a narrative feature called Turning Points. The newly added fictional scenarios allow players to experience key Romance of the Three Kingdoms events as though history had unfolded differently.
Fictional scenarios were already part of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake, but the Destiny and Strategy Expansion Pack includes what is easily the strongest selection so far. Previously, “Lady Power” stood out by reimagining the entire map under the leadership of female officers from the Three Kingdoms, dramatically reshaping the political and military landscape. In the new “Liu and Lu” scenario, players can explore an alternate history in which the legendary warrior Lu Bu joins forces with Liu Bei.
This scenario represents the ultimate “what if” moment for the series. Instead of turning against Liu Bei after betraying Dong Zhuo, a path that historically led to Lu Bu’s defeat by Cao Cao at the Battle of Xiapi, the expansion imagines the two figures as allies. Seeing Lu Bu and Liu Bei share Sworn Brother status is striking, and it allows a decades-old story to be reinterpreted in genuinely surprising ways.
After seeing how events unfold, it becomes clear that Koei Tecmo wanted fans to have meaningful control over these scenarios. Players are given authority over warlords, territory and now even the narrative itself, creating a complete framework for exploring long-standing “what if” scenarios from start to finish.
The newly introduced Gem system is designed to remove long-standing limitations on favourite officers. Using it, I was able to shape characters into more well-rounded leaders, rivalling figures such as Cao Cao in versatility.

Lu Bu is not known for strategic brilliance, but the Gem system allows his officer profile to be reworked. By investing Gems into Debate and Diplomacy, along with a much-needed boost to Intelligence, he becomes far more capable outside of direct combat. While this will not turn him into a master tactician on the level of Zhuge Liang, it does allow him to hold his own in verbal confrontations after careful customization.
Gems can also be used to strengthen weaker officers through training mechanics. Lu Bu begins with a maximum Strength rating of 100 and, when paired with a specific ability, sparring with weaker officers grants them significant Strength experience bonuses. This creates an efficient way to develop your roster by learning directly from elite characters. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake: Destiny and Strategy Expansion Pack also introduces a new narrative system called Turning Points, further expanding how player choices can influence the course of events.
Turning Points flip scenarios on their head and can reframe an event in the middle of a skirmish. These moments present themselves often and keep the player on edge throughout what would normally be smooth sailing.
In one otherwise predictable scenario, the Battle of Chibi, random invading tribes appeared, forcing me to halt my preparations to deal with the incursion. This approach borrows from the Dynasty Warriors Empires spin-off by introducing NPC factions that also seek control outside the traditional three powers. The result is a much-needed element of surprise in scenarios that have been reworked dozens of times.

The main issue with Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake: Destiny and Strategy Expansion Pack Bundle is that, more than a year after the base game launched, little has been done to address repetitive gameplay The artificial intelligence controlling computer-run factions, including your own, is still weak. While playing as Lu Bu, I serve as an officer and can request policies, but all decisions are ultimately made from the ruler’s perspective.
If Liu Bei invades a rival state and fails, he may repeat the same action regardless of my advice or the previous outcome, which can quickly become frustrating. The experience is comparable to a sports game franchise mode where a superstar is traded for a 60-overall player. It breaks immersion and can undermine the entire campaign.
This issue can be mitigated by playing as a ruler, but the opposition then becomes the problem, as rival factions may invade repeatedly without success. Localization also remains an issue in Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake. Some dialogue translations read awkwardly, though this is far from game-breaking.
Finally, while the relationship system is extensive and fairly complex, only the player character’s relationships truly matter. I attempted to have dinner with Zhang Liao, only to see our relationship worsen due to Lu Bu’s poor table manners. Although Lu Bu maintained his friendship with Zhang Liao, largely through training, and formed new relationships with Zhang Fei, Zhang Liao’s relationships did not meaningfully evolve beyond his connection to Lu Bu over several months. It strains credibility to imagine Zhang Liao simply waiting for months, only for Lu Bu to offend him over dinner once again.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake: Destiny and Strategy Expansion Pack Bundle does what the RTK series does best, returning fans to the era of the Records of the Three Kingdoms with confidence and finesse. Over the decades, KOEI TECMO has grown adept at bringing this period to players around the world, and the studio still has a few tricks up its sleeve.
New ways to build officers using Gems, along with the addition of Fictional Scenarios, give long-time RTK fans plenty to dig into. However, the reluctance to address flawed systems more than a year after launch is disappointing, particularly for newcomers drawn in by the prominent use of the word remake in the title. Even so, fans of RTK, and especially RTK 8, will find a welcoming return here, as Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake ultimately stands as the strongest version of the game to date.
