Never Resting On Its Laurels

Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

When a game that comes out every year has an iteration that is well received, you can usually count on the developers to rest on their laurels, cleaning up a few small things and adding a couple of incremental improvements to make the game just different enough to move to the new version. The team behind WWE 2K26 was having none of that, making big changes across all of the game’s modes and not disappointing in the process.

WWE 2K26 offers over 400 wrestlers, managers, referees and more, and the main roster has pushed the envelope even further in terms of how accurately they are adapted in the game. The old man in me remembers playing No Mercy for the N64 and thinking, “How are they ever going to have better graphics than this,” then finds myself seeing what they have done, with the sweat beading off their skin, and I have to remind myself that I am not watching Raw or Smackdown.

While the games have always had a lot of match types, WWE 2K26 has added even more, including the Dumpster Match, I Quit Match, Three Stages of Hell Match and the return of the Inferno Match. While the Dumpster match just feels like a copy/paste of a casket match, the other three offerings are more exciting. The I Quit Match has unique gameplay to stop yourself from quitting, the Inferno match has a great look, feeling like the matches from back in the late 90s, and Three Stages of Hell is a best two of three using all match types.

More weapons have been added to the fray, with a wrench and, more importantly, a bag of thumbtacks that can be spread everywhere and actually stick in the wrestlers when they find themselves getting slammed into them. It was by far my favourite of what I consider the smaller details added to the game, and takes me back to the hardcore matches of the Attitude Era. Even the reactions to being slammed on them took me back to Cactus Jack vs. Terry Funk. Stackable tables have also returned for that epic car wreck of a slam.

The Island, a popular game mode from WWE 2K25, has been revamped for WWE 2K26 and is now available on all platforms. On The Island, you create a wrestler (which I will get to, I promise) and join one of three factions for supremacy. The mode allows for single player or multiplayer, including online play and takes you out of the box when it comes to what you expect to see from pro wrestling. It’s a mode that is too big to get into here. Ultimately, it’s not for me, but I totally understand the appeal for players seeking that replayability factor.

The 2K Showcase in WWE 2K26  is called “Punked” and takes you through the journey of wrestler CM Punk, revisiting big moments in his career and answering a lot of “what ifs” that address what things would be like if he could have faced off against certain legends or if he never left the WWE. It’s a great mode with specific goals to take you through every match.

MyRISE offers you two journeys, one for the men’s division and one for the women’s division, that give you a character who is making their big comeback after years away. The story that they take you through is fun, but this is a thing that I have had an issue with for years. The writing and performance in these story modes never match up to the quality of what you see on TV each week.

There are a number of factors why these things underwhelm me. The wrestlers are used to feeding off of a crowd and not reading from a script, and the story is designed to get you from one task to another, so it doesn’t feel very natural. In the end, it doesn’t stop me from playing the modes because it’s immersive and gives you a new way to experience something very familiar to you, if you are a wrestling fan.

WWE 2K26’s My GM added new modes, including matches for five, six and eight wrestlers and intergender matches. They’ve also added some stakes to your show. If a wrestler fights and gets beaten up badly early in the show, they aren’t making it back out to the ring to cut a promo later on. This mode is among my favourites based on the creative factor that comes with rewards based on how creative you are.

Also among my favourites are the sandbox aspects of WWE 2K26, including Universe and the Creation Suite. Make your own new wrestlers (or create some old favourites if it is even possible that they aren’t already on the roster) using the most in-depth create a character mode I have ever seen, offering double the slots for you to use. Universe lets you make your own shows, book them and basically do anything you want. You see streamers playing in these worlds a lot because they’re entertaining to the player and anyone watching them.

WWE 2K26 comes in four editions, the base mode with CM Punk on the cover, the King of King’s Edition celebrating former champ and current creative head, HHH, The Attitude Era Edition, which showcases the roster of one of the hottest eras in the company’s history, winning them the Monday Night Wars, the last edition of the game which features names from WWE and WCW from that time. Each special edition gives you different bonuses, virtual cash and more, as well as a 7-day headstart on access to the game.

Early access to the game starts on March 6, 2026, with access to everyone coming on March 13. The Standard Edition comes in at $69.99 USD, and the Special Editions range from $99.99 to $149.99 USD. It’s a pricey investment to be sure, but with ringside pass and the bonuses each edition offers, you aren’t getting nothing for the price. If you are satisfied with the large menu of wrestlers and customizations already available to you, it’s fine to stick to the Standard Edition and save that cash.

As with the WWE itself, WWE 2K26 goes BIG. There are game modes for every type of player and endless replay potential. Play through and win the modes, book your own matches if you are the kind of person who thinks they can do better than the people working today or enter an open world full of other players to dominate a post-apocalyptic island. They say in WWE 2K26 that “the show never stops,” so it’s really just left to you to figure out where you are going to start.
