2025 Ford Expedition Platinum Edition

Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

I never thought I’d enjoy driving a full-size SUV—then I spent a few weeks with the 2025 Ford Expedition.

I’m at the point in my life where I’ve hit a crossroads in deciding what type of vehicle I want to drive. I’ve always been a big fan of Japanese tuners and have owned about seven different cars since I got my licence at 16 years old. I’ve never been a fan of SUVs and have always steered clear of them at all costs. A big vehicle had never once been appealing to me. A few years ago, my 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer GT went to the parking lot in the sky after serving me for 420,000 km. Due to adult responsibilities and the need for a larger car, I ended up purchasing a 2019 Nissan Rogue—my first SUV.

Since then, I’ve come to enjoy a larger vehicle. When I heard about the opportunity to test drive the new 2025 Ford Expedition, I was excited about the new technology in the car, but also a bit intimidated by its massive size. After a few weeks with this full-size SUV, I’ve become a pretty big fan of Ford’s flagship and can’t wait to see what future versions might offer.

“The 2025 Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV that offers a lot more than just a smooth driving experience.”

The 2025 Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV that offers a lot more than just a smooth driving experience. There’s a range of quality-of-life tech built into this vehicle that makes it one of the best in its class, thanks to its Digital Experience. I was given the Platinum edition to test for this review, which is one step up from the base model, and truthfully, it had everything I needed and more.

Let’s start with the basics. The 2025 Ford Expedition is a seven-seat full-size SUV that comes equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to connect up to 10 devices simultaneously. The sound system is top-notch, as Ford has stepped up its game and included a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen setup. I wasn’t familiar with the brand before testing this vehicle, but I’ve quickly become a fan of the quality it brings to the audio experience.

All models of the 2025 Ford Expedition come with a 360-degree backup camera, along with blind spot cameras that activate when you’re switching lanes. It took a bit of time to get used to, but it was comforting to have that added layer of visibility while changing lanes or backing out of a parking space. You have two displays in the vehicle: the main screen, located in the centre of the dash, and the heads-up display, positioned further back from the steering wheel. I thought this setup would be confusing, but the ability to customize what appears on the heads-up display made it intuitive and easy to use.

While driving, I had my current fuel economy, weather and overall mileage shown. Due to its placement, it felt natural to glance down at the extended screen rather than the main one. The vehicle’s main system runs on an Android-based platform, but it supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A nice bonus is the option to download apps directly through the centre console screen. With this, you can create a driver profile to adjust preferences such as seat position, steering wheel, and mirrors. You can also log in to your Google account to sync apps such as Spotify, YouTube, Prime Video, and many others that are compatible with the system.

One optional feature I ended up falling in love with on the 2025 Ford Expedition is the onboard internet connection. The 2025 Ford Expedition offers the option to purchase a data plan that connects the vehicle to a provider and enables a Wi-Fi hotspot. While this paid feature might not be for everyone, I found it incredibly useful on road trips—especially when passengers want to connect tablets to stream Netflix or play games. Ford also offers a fun entertainment option through its Arcade Sports Collection, which allows you to play casual games like Button Soccer or Shuffleboard by pairing a smartphone or a wireless Bluetooth controller, such as a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X controller.

During our initial briefing, Ford emphasized how well-suited the 2025 Ford Expedition is for long-distance travel. Under the hood, it features a 3.5-litre V6 engine that averages about 21 miles per gallon. For a vehicle of this size, that’s quite impressive. In the city, the Expedition achieves approximately 15.4 mpg, and on the highway, it averages about 10.7 mpg. Inside, the SUV features two 110-volt outlets for external charging, as well as a USB-C smart charging port located at every seat.

Heated and cooled seating extends to the back row, which is a welcome feature—especially for taller passengers. On the outside, the Expedition includes LED headlamps and taillamps, dual power-adjustable and heated mirrors that can be tied to your driver profile, power-deployable running boards for easier entry, rain-sensing wipers, a panoramic Vista Roof, roof rack, trailer sway control, and zone lighting that illuminates the surrounding area by two to three feet.

Another standout feature of the 2025 Ford Expedition is the splitgate. When the rear hatch is fully opened, the lower gate can support up to 600 pounds—ideal for sitting at a drive-in movie or tailgating before a game. Ford also includes FordPass Connect as part of its Digital Experience. This lets you access the vehicle remotely using your smartphone or smartwatch. I used it almost every day during my time with the vehicle. With it, I could start the SUV remotely, lock or unlock it, and check on its status—such as fuel and oil levels, whether the engine was running or parked, and even access 24-hour roadside assistance.

My absolute favourite feature of the 2025 Ford Expedition has to be the BlueCruise technology. This is an additional paid add-on, but I personally think it’s well worth it. Ford BlueCruise is a hands-free driving assistance system designed to make driving easier, more enjoyable and less stressful. It’s not fully self-driving, but it comes pretty close. This technology utilizes the vehicle’s 360-degree cameras to activate “The Blue Zone,” which assesses your surroundings, activates advanced lane assist, and temporarily takes over driving.

“I enjoyed every moment I spent with the 2025 Ford Expedition.”

While it is a hands-free option, the steering wheel features a driver-facing camera that tracks your eye movements to ensure you remain focused on the road. If you look away too often—or start texting while in motion—you’ll get a visual alert on the heads-up display and an audio warning reminding you to stay focused. I used this feature when my wife and I left Toronto for a date night at Olive Garden in Buffalo. BlueCruise works on all 400-series highways in Canada and most major highways in the United States.

As great as the 2025 Ford Expedition is, the reality is it won’t be for everyone. The price is steep, depending on your preferences. I drove the Platinum edition, which is one step up from the base model, and the total cost came to $110,000 CAD after taxes. That said, pricing starts at $83,000 CAD and can go up to $112,000 CAD depending on the trim and package you choose. As a seven-seater full-size SUV, it’s ideal for larger families or anyone who regularly hauls a lot of cargo. But the Expedition is big—really big—and if you’re not used to driving something this size, there will be a learning curve. That said, you do get used to it quickly.

2025 Ford Expedition Platinum Edition Review

I enjoyed every moment I spent with the 2025 Ford Expedition. It offered everything I could possibly want—not just in a full-size SUV, but in a vehicle in general. As a relatively new SUV driver, I appreciated the larger size, which made for a relaxed and comfortable experience. What really made me fall in love with this vehicle, though, was the digital experience. While it is an additional add-on, I highly recommend including it if you’re considering this as your next daily driver. Ford really outdid themselves with this one, and I can’t wait to see what future SUV lineups look like. Until then, I’ll be waiting—with excitement.
