Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

Look out, Razer fans, there is a new contender in town when it comes to the premium gaming laptop experience. Fresh from Acer is the new Predator Triton 14 AI, a premium-built gaming laptop that boasts high-end specs and performance with some unique tricks up its sleeve.

Straight out of the box, it is immediately clear that Acer means business. Featuring a full-aluminum build, the cold-to-the-touch chassis felt as though I were pulling a slab of metal from the box rather than a high-end gaming machine. Coming in at a slightly heftier-than-average 3.5 pounds, the Acer Predator Triton 14 AI’s extra weight was certainly noticeable, especially compared with some of the lighter 14-inch business-class laptops I have reviewed, some of which weigh at or under three pounds.

This is still a very portable laptop and will not weigh you down too significantly in a bag or backpack. Coming in at only 0.7 inches thick, it is only slightly more than one-tenth of an inch thicker than its largest competitor, the Razer Blade 14.

Looking at the laptop, the first thing most people will notice is the subtle yet glossy Predator logo on the top lid. This is both RGB-backlit and customizable. We will get more into that later in this review. Running along the left side, you will find a USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, a USB Type-A 3.2 port, a headphone-microphone combo jack and a speaker grille.

On the right, you will find an HDMI 2.1 port, a second USB Type-A 3.2 port, a Thunderbolt 4 port, a microSD slot, and a second speaker grille. I am thankful for the inclusion of the microSD card slot and wish more manufacturers would include this in their laptops when possible.

Opening the lid of the laptop reveals the Acer Predator Triton 14 AI’s very glossy 14.5-inch OLED WQXGA+ display with a resolution of 2880 by 1800. This display was chock-full of surprises that I certainly did not expect to see from a laptop of this form factor.

For starters, unlike the majority of gaming laptops on the market, this is the first time I have seen a manufacturer incorporate a touch display into the screen. While this did make browsing some web pages and interacting with game menus much easier, Acer’s decision to make the display glossy resulted in the screen being plagued by fingerprints and streaks, ultimately leading me to have to wipe the display more than I would on other laptops.

“Acer has done a wonderful job designing the keyboard for the Predator Triton 14 AI.”

Colours on this display were impressively sharp and saturated, looked true to life and almost appeared to pop off the screen. The display is also Calman Verified to cover 100 percent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, making it an excellent option for video and photography editing, while also making visuals in games much more immersive.

In the words of Billy Mays, “But wait, there’s more.” Acer has further improved the Predator Triton 14 AI’s display by giving it a rapid 0.2 ms response time and a 120 Hz refresh rate, further enhancing gameplay, especially in games that require quick reactions, such as FPS titles. While my gaming skill and the games I generally gravitate toward do not always make full use of the response time, the available refresh rate makes games look butter-smooth. We will dig into the performance side of things later in this review.

Acer has done a wonderful job designing the keyboard for the Predator Triton 14 AI. The overall layout was similar to that of my daily laptop, making it a much easier transition when compared with other laptops that use different key shapes and spacing. To free up function-key hotkeys, Acer has even dedicated a button to quickly switch between power modes and added a separate key to open its PredatorSense software. Further improving the keyboard was the minimal deck flex, very similar to that of MacBook and Razer laptops, making this one of the more rigid gaming laptops I have tested to date.

RGB backlighting was mesmerizing when fully turned on and at full brightness, and Acer has allowed users to fully customize how the keyboard is lit, with per-key colour options. This was especially handy for me when learning new games, as I was able to colour-coordinate different keys with different command groups.

One of the next set of surprises built into the Acer Predator Triton 14 AI is related to the touchpad. Unlike most gaming laptops that use traditional diving-board-style touchpads, Acer has stepped things up a notch by using a haptic touchpad that takes up about 40 percent of the palm rest area. While I personally found the touchpad too sensitive, even after adjustment, it was still accurate and generally pleasant to use.

Acer has also built in stylus support on the touchpad, something I have not seen before. This turns the touchpad into a small drawing tablet. I did find it a little weird to use personally, but I am sure those who use drawing tablets will find it rather useful for accomplishing various tasks. I did find it a little bizarre that Acer chose not to have pen support on the display, as I feel it could have added some additional functionality.

To my amazement, Acer has managed to cram a six-speaker system into the compact Predator Triton 14 AI chassis. Featuring two speakers and a tweeter on both the left and right sides, at least on paper, Acer has one of the most impressive-sounding systems for a 14-inch laptop. Unfortunately, I found it fell short of my expectations, as I often needed to turn the volume up higher than on my primary laptop just to hear similar audio. As a result, I often found the sound produced seemed muffled, even when the laptop was on hard surfaces like a desk or table.

Despite being powered by an Intel Core Ultra 9 288V, at least in synthetic benchmarks, I was a little surprised by how underwhelming the overall results from the Acer Predator Triton 14 AI were. Running my usual group of benchmarks, I generally got results similar to those of business-class laptops with lower-tier Intel Core Ultra 7 200 series chips.

“Where the Acer Predator Triton 14 AI truly excels is when it comes to gaming.”

Starting off with Cinebench 2024, with the Performance preset chosen for added power, I was able to squeeze out only 638 points in multi-core testing. This was only a single point higher than the HP EliteBook 8 G1i I tested last year.

Next up, I ran Geekbench 6, only to find similar results. Scoring 2,831 points in single-core and 10,919 points in multi-core, and comparing this to the same HP, Acer’s results were slightly higher in single-core but slightly lower in multi-core.

While this can be beneficial for battery life, as we will go over shortly, I could not help but wish for a slightly more powerful chip, given that this is a gaming laptop. This also adds to the laptop’s overall cost, making it more expensive for consumers. I cannot help but wonder how the price would look if the Predator Triton 14 AI had an Intel Core Ultra 7 CPU instead.

When it came to the GPU, the Acer Predator Triton 14 AI performed admirably, scoring 129,398 points in Geekbench 6’s GPU benchmark. This is about 4,000 points higher than what similar Nvidia RTX 5070 GPUs in laptops score on Geekbench, according to Geekbench’s charts.

Of course, where the Acer Predator Triton 14 AI truly excels is when it comes to gaming. Coming packed with an Nvidia RTX 5070 with 8 GB of memory, paired with 32 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, the Predator Triton 14 AI has an even better GPU than my recently reviewed ASUS TUF Gaming A14, which packed a slightly lower-tier RTX 5060.

Similar to the ASUS I reviewed, every game I tested was run at maxed-out settings and at the highest resolution to push the laptop as hard as possible and see what it was capable of. With each game I tried, whether it was Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 5, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 or my favourite game, BeamNG.drive, everything ran silky smooth, with some titles even nearly reaching the 100 fps range at times.

No matter which game I tested on the Acer Predator Triton 14 AI, the laptop managed to keep its temperature well under control and, at most, warm to the touch. At no time did I ever find the bottom lid or keyboard area getting too hot to touch, which is much better than I have seen with some larger gaming laptops in the past.

Acer has used graphene TIM instead of traditional thermal paste, which has proven to help keep the laptop much cooler while also helping to boost performance, something I hope and would love to see more companies use in their high-performance systems.

Acer has also optimized the internal fans to further improve airflow and cooling, which also helps keep temperatures well under control, even when pushing the system hard with intense AAA games or benchmarks.

Despite its thin chassis, Acer has somehow still managed to cram a 76 Wh battery into the Predator Triton 14 AI. While overall battery life was not breaking any records, I still generally managed to get up to about 10 hours of use, mainly from watching YouTube and other online media, along with web browsing. This was about on par with most laptops I have tested recently in this size class. This was, however, still fairly impressive when you consider that this is still a gaming laptop packing additional hardware.

As I hinted at a few times earlier in the review, Acer has added RGB lighting in a few different zones that you can fully customize in its PredatorSense software. Here, users can change the colours of the external lid cover, fully customize the keyboard colours, and additionally change the internal logo colour. I rather enjoyed the extra customizability, as it allowed me to really make the laptop look how I wanted instead of getting locked down with minimal options.

Acer Predator Triton 14 Ai Laptop Review

Acer has truly stepped up its game with the Predator Triton 14 AI, delivering a package that someone could easily think was made by a much more premium brand, such as Razer. I was absolutely amazed at just how much Acer was able to cram into such a compact form factor, let alone a 14-inch laptop. Acer also managed to add additional functionality not typically seen on this class of laptop, allowing you to use the Predator Triton 14 AI in a multitude of different ways. While it is certainly not the cheapest gaming laptop on the market, given all it has to offer, it is in a class of its own.
