Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

There are a number of key features gamers look for in a great gaming mouse—polling rate, macro buttons, comfort, and overall responsiveness can all make or break the experience. With the ROG Spatha X, ASUS promises to deliver on all fronts and more, offering what may be the most premium package I’ve encountered in a mouse to date. But does it have what it takes to be the best gaming mouse on the market? Let’s take a closer look.

Right out of the box, the ASUS ROG Spatha X makes a bold impression. The packaging is noticeably larger than any mouse I’ve previously reviewed—or even seen in stores. The box itself is packed with high-resolution images and vibrant design, setting the stage for a premium unboxing experience.

And ASUS doesn’t disappoint when it comes to what’s inside. Beyond the usual warranty and information booklets, the company has gone above and beyond. You’ll find the Spatha X mouse, of course, but also a durable travel pouch to keep it protected—something I hadn’t seen included with other mice, and a feature I now wish more brands adopted.

Along with the pouch, ASUS includes not one, but two high-quality paracord USB cables, as well as a robust metal charging dock that doubles as a display stand. But that’s not all: the box also contains extra swappable mouse switches, a tool for installation, and even a rigid ROG decal to show off your allegiance to the Republic of Gamers brand.

Before diving into the performance, let’s talk about the price. The ASUS ROG Spatha X retails for a premium of $169.99. That’s undeniably steep for a gaming mouse, but in this case, the price feels justified. ASUS has packed so much into the box that it easily surpasses other mice in this price range that offer far less in terms of included accessories and overall build quality.

Turning to the design, the ROG Spatha X is noticeably large. With my smaller hands, it felt a bit oversized, but users with average or larger hands will likely find it more comfortable. In addition to the standard buttons and scroll wheel, the Spatha X boasts an impressive eight additional programmable buttons. ASUS has also incorporated three customizable RGB lighting zones, offering plenty of flair for gamers who love to personalize their setup.

Now, onto the core of the review—the features that matter most for serious gamers.

“This is a premium gaming mouse in every sense of the word.”

At the top of the list is the DPI. The ROG Spatha X comes equipped with a whopping 19,000 DPI sensor, delivering lightning-fast precision and pinpoint accuracy. Whether you’re lining up headshots or flicking between enemies, the tracking is excellent. Personally, I found anything over 6,000 DPI too twitchy for my playstyle—I prefer a more measured pace—but for high-level players and esports enthusiasts, having access to that upper range is a major plus.

Next up, let’s talk about macro and programmable keys—something not only gamers will appreciate. ASUS offers an impressive level of flexibility with the ROG Spatha X, allowing you to fully program all eight additional buttons. Even better, you can remap the primary click and scroll functions to suit your preferences.

Personally, I found this incredibly useful. Outside of gaming, I mapped several keys for media controls, making it easy to play, pause or adjust volume without touching the keyboard. In-game, I set them to handle actions like reloading in FPS titles or shifting gears in racing sims. This not only saved me from reaching awkwardly across my keyboard during critical moments, but also made those actions faster and more intuitive once I trained my thumb to hit the right spot reliably.

To further enhance versatility, ASUS includes two modes of operation: wireless and wired. For a clean, cable-free setup, the ROG Spatha X connects wirelessly through the included charging dock, which also doubles as the wireless receiver. When fully charged, the battery can last up to 67 hours with RGB lighting disabled—an impressive runtime for such a feature-rich device. Even better, just 15 minutes of charging can deliver up to 12 additional hours of gameplay, making it perfect for last-minute sessions.

Prefer a wired connection? ASUS has you covered there, too. A forward-mounted USB-C port allows you to plug in either of the two included paracord-braided cables. Both are lightweight and flexible, ensuring smooth gameplay without the drag or stiffness that can plague some wired mice from competitors.

While I personally would’ve liked to have potentially seen Bluetooth offered on the mouse, like competitors tend to offer, for a little extra flexibility when on the go, but having the included carry pouch to hold the mouse, cable, and dock helps mitigate this complaint to an extent. This would also likely have reduced the overall battery life and would have resulted in having to charge the ROG Spatha X much more frequently.

“ASUS has knocked it out of the park with the ROG Spatha X.”

Finally, a gamer favourite: RGB lighting. ASUS has equipped the ROG Spatha X with three distinct lighting zones on the mouse itself, along with a fourth zone built into the charging dock. This offers more lighting customization options than are typically found on most gaming mice. Through ASUS’s Armoury Crate software, users can fine-tune lighting patterns and colours, and even sync them with other ROG products for a fully coordinated setup. It’s a slight touch, but one that adds a layer of polish and personalization that many gamers appreciate.

When all is said and done, ASUS has knocked it out of the park with the ROG Spatha X. This is a premium gaming mouse in every sense of the word. Not only are you getting top-tier specs and performance, but you’re also receiving a generous set of extras—from high-quality cables and hot-swappable switches to a protective travel pouch and a stylish dock. These additions help the Spatha X stand out in a crowded market and justify its premium price tag.

If you’re serious about your gear and have the budget to match, the ASUS ROG Spatha X is easily one of the nicest and most complete gaming mice available today. It’s a worthy investment that delivers both style and substance.
