Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

That title is a mouthful, but it tells you almost everything you need to know about the Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-Port Laptop Power Bank 20k. I have tested quite a few large-capacity, laptop-level power banks, and I am always unimpressed with them. Do I love that they are powerful enough to charge my laptop on-the-go? Of course. Do I love that I can use one power bank to charge multiple devices? Absolutely. However, it is always a struggle to decide if that convenience and power are worth the weight and bulk a laptop-sized power bank adds to my bag.

The reason I decided to take on the Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-Port Laptop Power Bank 20k is not because of its glamorous name. It was because of its shape. Where many power banks are long and thick, the BoostCharge Pro takes a shape more like an old Blackberry, just a bit bigger. It is still one of the bulkier charges in my go-bag, but it is wider and thinner rather than longer and thicker, at 130.8 × 85 × 25.5 mm.

I love its form factor, which makes it easier to slip into a backpack or purse without creating too much bulk. It also feels lighter than other devices I have lugged around on trips. Even if it were as heavy, the fact that it can slip flat into a pocket is vital to my packing strategy. It also features a full-colour LCD screen which offers battery percentage, time to drain and time to charge details for the BoostCharge Pro.

The Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3 offers the following ports:

  • USB‑C 1: Input/Output, up to 65W PD
  • USB‑C 2: Input/Output, up to 65W PD
  • USB‑A: Output, 18W Quick Charge

The total shared output of the Belkin BoostCharge Pro is about 65W, depending on the charging configuration. For instance, the single-port USB-C offers 65W, whereas it could offer 45W, while the other offers 20W, or 45W, while the USB-A offers 18W, according to their press materials. The Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-Port Laptop Power Bank is a 20,000 mAh charger, so you can absolutely make use of all three ports at once. It also offers passthrough charging, meaning it can charge itself while charging other devices.

I ran the Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-Port Laptop Power Bank 20k through a series of charging challenges. First, I used it to power my Govee Table Lamp 2 since it wasn’t near an outlet. It managed to run the lamp with full sound and animated lighting for a full eight hours before it died. This isn’t exactly what it was designed for, but I was impressed.

I then moved onto a MacBook Pro M5, since Belkin tends to boast its compatibility with Apple more than anything else. The BoostCharge Pro still managed to give the M5 an extra “boost”—keeping in mind that it is a beast of a laptop. Bringing the laptop from 65% to 99% took about 50 minutes, but the charger sat at 36% afterwards.

It would not offer a full charge for the M5, but it would come close. In testing, I learned that the Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-Port Laptop Power Bank 20k is likely to be more impressive while maintaining 100% battery over charging one that has already lost power, which could prove interesting for those M5 users.

Testing the BoostCharge Pro with my regular laptop, the ASUS Zenbook S14, it used 65% of its power to charge the laptop 35% in about 50 minutes. Not exactly speedy. However, on a flight home from Paris, I noticed that the device is much more power-friendly when maintaining the charge rather than powering it up. When I first plugged the device in, my ZenBook was at 77%, and the LCD screen read “1h15m to 0%.” That seemed…fast.

However, once the Zenbook was charged to 100%, and the BoostCharge Pro was drained to 64% 30 minutes later, the time on that screen jumped significantly. At that time, it read 2h27m to 0%, doubling even though it had lost more than a quarter of its power. Another 30 minutes later, the device sat at 52%, and the time still read 2h44m to 0%.

“The Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-Port Laptop Power Bank 20k is likely to be more impressive while maintaining 100% battery.”

The on-screen estimate also seems to jump around a lot, reaching all the way to 4h15m before quickly bouncing back into the two-hour range. It seems to lose about 10% to 15% per hour during productivity tasks like writing without Wi-Fi. If you wanted to power up while streaming or gaming, the device would take a beating. You will get more out of the Belkin BoostCharge Pro if you plug in at 100%. I was impressed with its power-maintaining capabilities far more than its charging capabilities.

I also managed some testing with the Nintendo Switch 2 while travelling. It seems to take about 1% from the battery to charge 1% of the Switch 2, within reason. What really impressed me, though, was that it said 8h30m to 0%, meaning it said it would maintain the Switch 2’s charge for over eight hours. In an hour and a half, the battery pack had lost only 15% battery life, making this a great choice for gamers out there, too.

Charging the Belkin BoostCharge Pro is fairly standard. It does come with a USB‑C to USB‑C cable that supports 60W charging, but no power brick. When charging with the 45W charger I had on hand, I was able to bring the device from empty to full in about 1 hour and 45 minutes. This much power does come with a price, and the BoostCharge Pro will run you $89.99 USD, but it is an all-in-one charging solution.

I went into the Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-Port Laptop Power Bank 20k review already pretty positive because I adore the shape and size of the device compared to others on the market. Being a 20k power bank, I knew it would be able to give some life to my devices. Maintaining your charge is certainly the way to go, but I will be bringing this with me anywhere I may not have an outlet, whether it is for my phone, laptop, Nintendo Switch, or maybe all three.
