Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

The Light Base 900 FX is part of the new Light Base lineup now available from manufacturer bequiet!. This incredibly robust case is designed to accommodate any PC component currently on the market. With room for an extensive range of motherboards, cooling systems and cable management, the Light Base 900 FX is the best case I’ve ever reviewed.

As a manufacturer, bequiet! has consistently been a brand that has impressed. From coolers to PSUs to cases, bequiet! offers an impressive design that always prioritizes function, design and durability. The Light Base 900 FX is the latest case to come from this impressive pedigree and offers some unique and quality-of-life features for your next build.

Off the hop, it’s important to note that the Light Base 900 FX is the largest case in the new Light Base series. Measuring a whopping 532 x 327 x 484mm, there is nothing small about this case. However, the size is perhaps one of its most valuable features. Built as an adaptable masterpiece, the Light Base 900 FX offers an impressive amount of flexibility to accommodate your most elaborate builds.

“Built as an adaptable masterpiece, the Light Base 900 FX offers an impressive amount of flexibility to accommodate your most elaborate builds.”

For starters, it can easily house several motherboard sizes, from the mini-ATX to the largest ATX variant, the E-ATX, with ease. Thanks to the added depth and the dual-chamber design, installing the motherboard is exceptionally easy, with lots of clearance for larger hands like mine to make quick work of the installation without trying to sandwich your sausage fingers between the side of the case and the PSU housing.

On that Dual-Chamber design, bequiet! has engineered an impressive and easy-to-access rear chamber with plenty of clearance for cables and wire runs. Whether you are an OCD cable manager or a shut-it-and-forget-it builder, the Light Base 900 FX offers plenty of room. On that note, feeding cables to various components throughout the case is also incredibly accessible, thanks to the multiple access points built into the chassis. When not used, each access point is covered with a silicon cover, making it easily blend into the chassis.

The Light Base 900 FX comes stock with four preinstalled 140mm Light Wings Fans. First, if you’ve never used a bequiet! fan, let me encourage you to give one a try. They are some of the most efficient and quiet fans I’ve worked with. Each comes with full RGB lighting that routes back to a central ARGB controller pre-mounted in the rear chamber, which also makes tying in other RGB-powered components a breeze.

The Light Base 900 FX also includes 3m of ARGB LED lighting along the side of the case. With 172 individual LEDs offers a lot of fun customization for your build. Thanks to the ARGB controller, you can also link the LED strip to the motherboard, creating ultimate synchronization for your system. It’s clean, sharp-looking and easy to maintain.

As for stock cooling, I’ve noted a significant CPU and GPU temperature reduction since installing my components in the system. For example, where the GPU temps would typically idle around 55℃ in my previous case, since swapping over, I’ve seen a decrease to an average of 48℃. As a bonus, there has been a significant decrease in fan noise since swapping to the Light Base 900 FX.

For reference, the previous case used the same number of fans (140mm) and the same liquid cooling system. The Light Wings Fans are simply that quiet. Even when stress-testing the GPU, the system still managed to stay incredibly quiet. In this regard, the company lives up to its namesake.

One of the most impressive design features of the Light Base 900 FX is its sheer adaptability. Thanks to its larger dimensions, the 900 FX can house up to two 420mm radiators with an E-ATX motherboard mounted to the chassis. Even with the 420mm radiators installed, there is still room for an additional 360mm radiator if, for some reason, you really like radiators. What’s most important about this design is the inclusion of 2 ARGB and PWM hubs, which offer an impressive 12 connectors to handle your component customization.

“If you’re a PC builder that values display, the 900 FX offers some of the best ‘displaying’ quality I’ve seen in a case.”

As for GPU installation, this case has no issue housing even the most robust GPUs on the market. Thanks to an included adjustable GPU support bracket, you’ll also have no issue supporting the GPU, no matter the layout. It’s the best and most discrete bracket system I’ve seen. An additional rail system is attached to the side of the chassis which houses the bracket. A tension screw holds it in place, and a small hinge allows you to tuck it out of the way if not in use. Simply loosening the screw allows you to slide the bracket into place and support the GPU. It’s a simple but elegant quality-of-life feature that I love.

What makes this case more adaptable still is that the layout of the Light Base 900 FX can be swapped with ease. Feel like inverting the case? Not a problem. The 900 FX features removable feet that can be mounted to the top or even along the backside of the case, giving you full creative freedom with your build. Looking for a horizontal build, the 900 FX has you covered. Thanks to the multi-access cable points, you can install the components any way you would like. The top and bottom of the case are fitted with identical tray and bracket systems, allowing you to mount those aforementioned radiators in either location, further maximizing the case’s adaptability.

All of this customization culminates in some of the nicest and largest glass casing I’ve worked with. The window panels on the Light Base 900 FX are incredibly large and help create a panorama view of your components, allowing you to show it all off. If you’re a PC builder that values display, the 900 FX offers some of the best ‘displaying’ quality I’ve seen in a case.

S,o who is this case for? The 900 FX is designed for three types of builders. If you’re someone who wants to display your components, I’d highly recommend the 900 FX. Alternatively, if you are a builder looking for a unique case layout, the 900 FX is going to be able to accommodate it with ease. Finally, if you’re a builder who wants to run powerful components while maintaining both a quiet and cool case environment, I would recommend the 900 FX as a case for that build.

The bequiet! Light Base 900 FX is a phenomenal case that offers exceptional build flexibility and plenty of room to install whichever components you have. The inclusion of the Light Wings Fans, ARGB controller system and adaptable chassis supports make the 900 FX one of the most audible cases I’ve worked with. Throw in the bequiet! pedigree of quality and efficiencies, and you have one of the best cases I’ve reviewed. Priced at a competitive $239.99, the bequiet! Light Base 900 FX is worth considering.
