The GameSir Pocket Taco aims to bridge the gap between powerful smartphones and the physical controls retro games were originally designed around. As someone who plays a range of retro games, I have used a wide array of emulation handhelds to make my playtime more enjoyable. I am constantly asked, “Why don’t you just use your phone?” It is a valid question. Any phone I have used lately is more than powerful enough to run the systems and games I want to play. However, my issue always comes down to one simple problem: I hate using a touch screen to play games that were originally designed for controllers.
Thankfully, GameSir has released the Pocket Taco, a pocket-sized controller that wraps around the bottom of your phone to take mobile gaming to the next level. Since unboxing it, the GameSir Pocket Taco has quickly become a piece of tech I reach for regularly, not only for its versatility but also for its portability. Measuring just 3.07 x 2.79 x 0.81 inches and weighing 62.2 grams, it slips easily into a pocket without weighing you down.

To my surprise, GameSir packed much more into the box than I expected. Along with the Pocket Taco, you also get a slip case, wrist strap, charging cable and manual. I truly appreciated the inclusion of the case, as it helps keep the controller safe when stashing it in a pocket or tech bag while travelling.

With support for both iOS and Android, pairing is as simple as wrapping the controller around your phone, like a taco, and selecting it in the Bluetooth pairing menu. Within seconds, I was connected with no issues. The setup process to map each button will vary depending on the app and operating system, but in most cases, it is simply a matter of going into the app’s settings and configuring the controls.
Once everything was set up with my games and emulators, I quickly became immersed for hours, replaying childhood favourites such as Tetris, Super Mario World and several titles from the Pokémon series. GameSir claims up to 30 hours of gameplay from the Pocket Taco, despite its small 600 mAh battery. That is longer than most phone batteries last during extended gaming sessions and could make it a better option on the go than some dedicated handhelds that require more frequent charging.

The buttons on the GameSir Pocket Taco reminded me of the Nintendo DMG Game Boy, thanks to their soft membrane feel that delivers a strong sense of nostalgia. I was immediately on board with that design choice. The addition of rear shoulder buttons and triggers provides extra control options for systems that require them, something I was glad to have when needed.
“In my time using the GameSir Pocket Taco, it has been a genuine game-changer when revisiting my favourite classic titles.”
Everyone’s experience will differ depending on phone and case thickness, which affects how substantial the controller feels in hand. That said, both my Google Pixel 8 and iPhone 16e were comfortable to use and did not add excessive bulk during gameplay. The controller relies on your grip to stay secure, as the internal springs did not clamp tightly against either phone. Stronger springs, or even some type of elastic support, could improve stability in my view.
In my time using the GameSir Pocket Taco, it has been a genuine game-changer when revisiting my favourite classic titles. Physical buttons enhance the experience, and its portability makes it easy to slip in and out of a pocket when needed. When friends and family tried it, they agreed it was a great experience that noticeably improved gameplay. Several said they would consider buying one for themselves.

All in all, while the GameSir Pocket Taco has a few minor quirks, it has become a valuable part of my everyday tech carry and one of my favourite phone accessories to date. For years, I have waited and hoped for a product of this quality that remains affordable enough for virtually anyone to pick up without breaking the bank. For anyone looking for a portable controller for retro gaming on their phone, this is an awesome piece of kit. I hope GameSir continues to refine the product with future revisions.
