Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

A new smartphone is considered an occasion for a lot of people. The thrill of choosing a new companion for your daily life for the next year (or two or three or four, depending on your preference) is something that doesn’t happen all that often, and it’s exciting to learn an entirely new device. This is where the Google Pixel 10a entered for me, as I am still running my trusty Pixel 9 with great pleasure. Releasing, as always, a few months after its older sister, the Pixel 10, the brand new Pixel 10a aims to impress in a number of categories.

The Google Pixel 10a unboxing is largely unchanged from the Pixel 9, offering the phone itself, a 1m USB-C to USB-C charging cable, and a SIM card removal tool. I was greeted by a lovely matte white colour, slightly confusingly named Fog, and I immediately fell in love. The device is also available in 3 other colours: Obsidian (black), Berry (red), and Lavender (Purple). If I hadn’t been sent the white version, the purple was the one for me as the colour really pops. Either way, not much new to report in terms of what’s in the box.

The actual device itself is a sight to behold when it comes to budget-friendly phones. The Pixel 10a weighs a paltry 183 grams, and it really does feel light in the hand. Thankfully, this doesn’t mean the device is fragile or delicate, in spite of its weight. I’m not exactly gentle on my phones, and the Google Pixel 10a is no exception, having fallen off my desk, lap, and bed all in the space of two days with nary a scratch to be found.

Keeping with a tried-and-true button design, the power and volume buttons are on the right side of the device, with the volume controls being the lower of the two button options, which just feels right in my hand. On the opposite side of the phone, you’ll find the SIM tray, and that’s about it for the physical nature of the device, save for the charging port and speakers found on the bottom.

“The Smooth Display feature contained in the Google Pixel 10a also allows the phone to take advantage of up to 120Hz refresh rate…”

When it comes to the physical specs of the Pixel 10a, there are a few things to take note of. Chief among them is the size, coming in at as-near-as-makes-no-difference 6.3″ (160mm), making it larger than both the Pixel 8 and 8a, and the same size as the Pixel 9. The 1080×2424 pOLED Actua display features 422.2 PPI and a 20:9 aspect ratio, keeping formats similar throughout the Google smartphone hierarchy.

The pOLED display offers 2000 nits in brightness when HDR is being utilized and up to 3000 nits at peak brightness. The Smooth Display feature contained in the Google Pixel 10a also allows the phone to take advantage of up to 120Hz refresh rate, and that really shows when switching between apps, scrolling at any type of speed, and more.

When it comes to hardware specifications, the Pixel 10a I received contains 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage space, which is more than enough for me, on both counts. Despite having less RAM than the Pixel 9 I was used to, I still didn’t notice any performance delays or lag when playing games like Magic: The Gathering Arena, Pokémon Go, etc., though I wouldn’t recommend much more in terms of intensity. When you combine the RAM with the Google Tensor G4 processor, the Pixel 10a becomes a capable device that can handle most things you throw at it in your daily life.

One thing that I really took notice of with the Pixel 10a is the battery life. With the Pixel 9, I was reaching the end of my work day with around 40% battery routinely, and it became a chore to keep the phone alive for the remainder of the night without charging it. Conversely, the Pixel 10a has been able to handle 6.5-7 hours of YouTube streaming and still have >%50 battery life by the end of the work day.

With a 5100 mAh battery life affording roughly 30 hours of use (or up to 120 hours with Extreme Battery Saver on), the Pixel 10a has handled everything I have thrown at it and smiled while doing it. To add more on top, the Pixel 10a has 30W Fast Wired Charging capability and 10W Wireless Charging as well, making the time spent on the charger even shorter, which is never a bad thing.

Going back to the physical design for a moment, the camera in the Pixel 10a has been revamped for the new release. A completely flat design that sees the camera flush with the rest of the phone body, a first for the Pixel A-series, provides an ergonomically pleasing aesthetic, allowing the device to lie flat on the desk, which is something I have wanted from the A-series for a long time.

While the physical design of the camera has been overhauled, the camera itself largely remains the same as the Pixel 9a. Featuring a 48 MP wide-angle lens with Macro Focus, a 13 MP ultra-wide lens on the back, and Super Res Zoom up to 8x, the Pixel 10a takes some very good pictures for a budget-model phone.

While the 8x zoom is an option, it definitely does not supply the most detailed photos, as you would find with a device like the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, but it is also a fraction of the cost. In low light, the Pixel 10a would brighten up images enough to suffice, and in regular conditions, I was more than pleased with the photos.

“For the average user, the Pixel 10a is everything one would need in a phone, and the price is reasonable as well.”

Running the latest version of Android 16, the Google Pixel 10a operates smoothly and quickly when put through the average everyday paces. Keeping with their commitment to support, the Pixel 10a will continue to receive seven years of software support, meaning you can hold on to this phone for a while before needing to consider upgrading.

As is the case with most phone families, the real upgrades are in the software, and the Pixel 10a is no exception in this regard. For example, for the first time in the A-Series, Satellite SOS is available, allowing you to stay connected to emergency services even without cellular or Wi-Fi service. As well, the Car Crash Detection & Crisis alerts are a wonderful feature that allows the phone to contact 911, as well as an emergency contact you nominate and share your location with them. These and more help make the Pixel 10a one of the most capable and safe-minded devices I’ve ever used.

All in all, I couldn’t be happier with the Pixel 10a, especially after skipping an iteration. For the average user, the Pixel 10a is everything one would need in a phone, and the price is reasonable as well. Coming in at $499 USD, the Pixel 10a doesn’t break the bank and offers an awful lot for the price, and is extremely easy to recommend.
