Hohem has long been a big name in gimbals for the everyday user, meaning people who are looking for something light, portable, easy to use and affordable. Their gimbals cover a wide variety of cameras you may put to use, including the action camera. The hohem iSteady Pro 4 is a secure and simple gimbal for your GoPro or action cameras of similar size, and opens your content up to a ton of new options.
In the box for the hohem iSteady Pro 4’s Standalone Kit (the kit we are testing), you will find the iSteady Pro 4, a mini tripod, charging cable, camera charging cable (connecting the gimbal to the camera for extended battery life) and a carrying case. The Tripod Kit comes with all of that, as well as an extendable tripod and phone holder that screws into the side of the iSteady Pro 4.

On the hohem iSteady Pro 4, you have the mount for your action camera with rubber backing to protect your camera and a small latch to secure the camera in place. While this will fit a lot of action cameras, like the GoPro series, the DJI Osmo Action series and others, cameras like the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 are too thick to fit in this mount. It’s worth double-checking these dimensions before purchasing this gimbal for your camera (or a new camera for your gimbal). The Bluetooth pair button and a remote control indicator also appear on the mount.
“Operation of the hohem iSteady Pro 4 is incredibly easy, especially if you have used one before.”
On the handle of the iSteady Pro 4, you have a number of controls, each of which serves a number of purposes. The trigger will activate sport mode or re-centre your gimbal. The joystick controls handle manual tilt and pan controls. The slider controls the roll of the gimbal up to 30 degrees in either direction, and the mode button switches between Pan Follow, Pan Tilt Follow, All Follow or All locked orientations. It also activates an offline calibration if pressed for six seconds.

The power on/off button also acts as a button to take pictures or start/stop video, as well as switching between photo and video if it is connected to the camera. On the side, you have the DC input and output for the gimbal, covered by a rubber cover to protect them from water and dust, and the screw for the phone holder if you have the tripod kit. There is also a 1/4“ thread at the bottom for the included tripod or any other mount with the correct screw.
Operation of the hohem iSteady Pro 4 is incredibly easy, especially if you have used one before. The controls are simple and intuitive, and the limited need for Bluetooth controls, simply hitting a button to record or take a picture, gives you everything you need at your fingertips. The gimbal itself is smooth, both when maintaining the steadiness while locking onto the position you set and while manually moving the gimbal around. During testing, the hohem iSteady Pro 4 gimbal hasn’t gotten stuck in position even for a split second, giving you silky smooth motion at all times.
“With an MSRP of $99 USD, the hohem iSteady Pro 4 is a fantastic tool for someone who is looking to take the production quality of their action camera footage to the next level.”
When you don’t have the controls at your fingertips because you’re working away from it, you can just access them with your phone. The hohem Gimbal app gives you access to the full controls of the device, controlling pan, tilt and roll as well as special settings letting you control the sensitivity of the virtual joystick. It also has a special feature where you can create your own pre-programmed motion lapse movement. You can set a number of waypoints that will determine your path, then set the duration that it would take to follow the path and hit begin. Then, combined with a time-lapse video set up in your camera, will give you some gorgeous shots.

With an MSRP of $99 USD, the hohem iSteady Pro 4 is a fantastic tool for someone who is looking to take the production quality of their action camera footage to the next level. I wouldn’t recommend something like this for the more rough and tumble action camera scenarios, like a snowboarding expedition or anything where speed is going to increase the likelihood of damage if you fall. I’d also not recommend it for someone who needs it only as a gimbal, without the need for the manual controls, as you shoot. Stabilization on action cameras is quite good, and a simple selfie stick will more than suffice for those users.
For someone who is looking to get creative with their action camera, or someone who uses it not only for sports but for vlogging and all sorts of other scenarios, the Hohem iSteady Pro 4 will prove to be a great tool for your toolkit.
