iClever BTH20 Active Noise Cancelling Headphones for Kids

Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

Finding the right headphones for your kids can be a delicate balancing act. Wired headphones are susceptible to yank-related malfunctions; you can’t let them blast their eardrums out; and spending too much is ill-advised if your kids aren’t mindful of their belongings. So, I was relieved to find that iClever’s BTH20 Active Noise Cancelling Headphones for Kids could cut through this particularly tricky Gordian Knot.

Among the more straightforward of iClever’s many designs, the BTH20 Headphones immediately struck me with their resilient and efficient construction. The headband easily extends or retracts with a few notches on each side to find the right fit. Both earcups swivel with a considerable range of motion, able to rotate 90-degrees and practically lay flat. Yet, they were also designed cleverly (no pun intended) to avoid some of the most common, glaring weak points that lead to physical damage in kids’ audio products.

(Plus, there’s plenty of real estate for stickers, if kids want to put their own personal touch on their headphones.)

As a whole, the iClever BTH20 feels light yet durable, enough that it could sustain accidental drops without growing uncomfortable with prolonged use. One key aspect to this success is the “skin-like” texture ringing the earcups themselves, which rests against the wearer’s head. This provides a comfortable seal to aid in the headphones’ noise-cancelling features, and avoids growing too hot like some leather-lined earphones for adults might.

Onboard controls reside on the right earcup as large, clearly-labelled buttons; power and volume are on the sides, while the Active Noise Cancelling gets a dedicated button on the back of the cup. A basic set of functions can be carried out with just three buttons—including answering calls, skipping media tracks, or even clearing the pairing list—if kids are savvy enough to utilize those instead of in-app options. Having ANC easily accessible is a nice touch, in case kids conveniently “can’t hear” their parents’ interruptions.

“35 hours is a commendable battery life for this age group, more than enough for the iClever BTH20 headphones to last most round trips.”

The BTH20’s noise-cancelling features are off by default at power-up, and come with two levels. The lower, “Gentle” mode cuts out some environmental noise, while the higher, “Enhanced” mode shuts out background mechanical noises for travel. Gentle should suffice for most everyday use if focus is a concern, without totally shutting the world out; I found I could still be heard by my kids without shouting to grab their attention. Having a heightened mode is a convenient option as well, though I’d want to reserve it for extenuating circumstances like airplane travel or incredibly distracting environments.

It’s worth noting that the noise-cancelling features aren’t available if you happen to be using the BTH20 headphones via their wired connection instead. It also comes at a considerable hit to battery life, reducing a full charge’s usage time from 60 hours to 35.

However, I’d be more concerned about that statistic if this wasn’t a product geared at kids. 35 hours is a commendable battery life for this age group, more than enough for the iClever BTH20 headphones to last most round trips on a single charge, or at least get you to a decent opportunity to recharge. In an absolute battery emergency, only 10 minutes of charging can buy about 5 hours of continued use, which is a great solution on busy travelling days.

In practice, the iClever BTH20 headphones have been a reliable tool for my child’s screen time options. They’re simple enough that he can operate them independently; chances are, if a child can work a device that would pair with these headphones, they can handle the onboard controls. They fold up well for travel, from long car rides to lobbies, or tuck away nicely in the living room after using his tablet in the evening. With short, occasional use, I almost never have to think about charging them—much less than the tablet itself, at any rate.

(I’ve certainly heard less Baby Shark and other irritating jingles, and that’s a win for any parent in the age of Cocomelon and YouTube Shorts.)

Balancing tech use or screen time is one of the great dilemmas modern parents have to grapple with, so it’s important to choose the right tools for your kids’ usage. The iClever BTH20 Headphones definitely feel like one of the best options for kids as they embark upon their own journeys with technology, sure to please parents and children alike. The price is right for the amount of features you’re getting, and those features can add up to a lot of peace of mind.
