The KYY X90D Triple Portable Monitor is a USB-C-powered portable monitor system that adapts to multiple settings and functions. Built as a desktop replacement solution, the X90D is a collapsible monitor that expands your laptop’s functionality up to a three (two plus laptop display) screen setup on the fly. Supporting full 1080p 60Hz at either a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio, the KYY X90D Triple Portable Monitor aims to deliver the best portable monitor solution on the market.
When I first opened the X90D I was slightly concerned about its durability. Thankfully I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the rugged build quality of the monitors. Being a collapsible monitor system the backplane (which sits behind the laptop when expanded) acts as an anchor point for the two monitors. The backplane is wide enough to support up to a 17.3” monitor, making it able to accommodate most laptops on the market.

Each monitor is attached to the backplane via a sturdy hinge that easily handles the weight of each monitor. One hinge sits higher than the other so that there is only one proper way to collapse the system. When closed it all tucks in nicely and thanks to some rubber spacers placed around the edges of each screen, a protective area helps reduce the chances of scratches or damage. Thanks to the thin 0.2” design, even when collapsed, the whole system is still relatively thin, making it ideal for packing in a laptop bag alongside your laptop or tablet.

The backplane for each section is constructed of what feels like hard plastic with metal framing. As a result, each monitor, when extended, feels sturdy without an excessive amount of flex. To further accommodate portability when the system is closed up the centre backplane has a cutout that serves as a handle for easy transportation. It’s a solid design overall with one small area that could use some improvement.
When opened up to its maximum 178° viewing mode the X90D has a kickstand that allows the whole system to sit at an angle (up to 90°) for better viewing. It works well as long as you keep the monitors close to in line with the backplane. If you try to angle the two monitors in too much, the weight distribution shifts, leaving you with a system that can’t maintain the viewing angle. It is a small critique considering that at its intended 178°viewing angle the KYY X90D Triple Portable Monitor works great but could be a frustration for those wanting to pull the monitors in a bit due to either desired viewing angle or limitations in desk space.

While the 178° viewing mode is an impressive feat for the X90D, it doesn’t stop there. The monitors can also be adjusted to support both a single monitor in portrait mode or as a triangle (with your laptop being one side) presentation system. Both of these modes work incredibly well, allowing for versatility in setup to better meet the needs of the user. Swapping modes is as easy as swinging the monitors into the desired position. In the case of Portrait mode, you will need to adjust the orientation of the monitor using your OS’s settings; but otherwise, it’s fairly simple to swap modes.
One of the key features of the KYY X90D Triple Portable Monitor is its ability to create a multi-monitor setup for laptops that don’t traditionally support this type of system. This is handled by a set of drivers available on KYY’s official site and works with Mac, PC, ChromeOS and Android. In testing, I connected the system to my MacBook Pro M1, which by default only supports one external monitor.
After installing the drivers and plugging the system in via a single USB-C cable, the monitors were immediately recognized and assigned as extensions of the main display. It was exceptionally easy to set up and use. I ran the same test on an OMEN Transcend here at the office with similar results.

Connecting the X90D is quite simple if you have the right type of USB-C port on your system. In order to get a video signal out of your laptop, the USB-C port must support video out, DisplayPort Alt or Thunderbolt. If you are running Thunderbolt, as an example, the USB-C cable can manage both the video signal and power management of the dual monitors, leaving you with a single cable setup. If power is required though, KYY includes a second USB-C cable and wall adaptor to accommodate your setup. It’s a smart design that is wonderfully easy to use.

While there are multiple sizes to choose from, our review model features two 15.6” IPS panel displays rated for 1920 x 1080 resolution at 60Hz refresh. With full 16.7M display colours and low blue light support, the displays are ideal for productivity. In testing, I didn’t notice any image ghosting or stuttering while moving windows around. The displays are decently bright as well with a 300 nits brightness rating and work well in an indoor office space even when sitting close to a window.
Each display on the KYY X90D Triple Portable Monitor comes with individual on-screen display (OSD) controls as well. This allows for easy per-monitor configuration. Colour management, brightness and other display settings can easily be managed from here thanks to the menu buttons located in the lower corner of each monitor.
While I’ve worked with a few different portable monitors over the past couple of years, the KYY X90D Triple Portable Monitor is one of the most adaptable and simple to set up. The power for three displays in a portable format is a game changer for productivity. As someone who works without a dedicated workspace for my day job, often setting up wherever there is a free table, countertop or cart, my workflows were improved thanks to the KYY X90D Triple Portable Monitor setup. Having the flexibility of the triple monitors in a portable format adds a quality of life improvement to my overall productivity that I’ve sorely missed.

The KYY X90D Triple Portable Monitor is an excellent solution for professionals who want to leverage a multi-monitor setup but are often on the go or working in multiple locations. While there is a small limitation in viewing angle due to weight distribution, the X90D is nonetheless one of the best portable monitor solutions I’ve worked with. Its one-cable solution, driver support and ease of use make it a great option for professionals needing a portable monitor solution.
