Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

Many factors need to be addressed when heading in to buy a new keyboard. Weight, keycap size, and overall features are just a few things to look out for, but for those who don’t necessarily need the top-of-the-line — or the most feature-rich peripherals out there — Logitech has a solution for you. Introducing the Logitech MX Keys S Combo, an all-in-one package which includes a mouse, a comfortable backlit keyboard and even a palm rest that breaks the stigma behind 3-in-1’s with quality, comfort, and solid design choices.

Right out of the gate, the Logitech MX Keys S Combo dresses to impress with solid matte black colourways on each peripheral. Included hardware; the keyboard, palm rest and the mouse, all complement each other perfectly, and each piece comes fully wireless (even the palm rest). A basic USB-A to USB-C cable is included for ease of connectivity, as well as a wireless transmitter (more on that later) for those who prefer super low latency without Bluetooth.

An ‘easy start guide’ is emblazoned on the inside of the packing box to save excess paper. It’s worth mentioning that although the wireless transmitter is included, the mouse and keyboard can work seamlessly with Bluetooth, with the option given to the user. This is a great choice, and it seems Logitech thought to include everything inside their MX Keys S Combo.

“Right out of the gate, the Logitech MX Keys S Combo dresses to impress with solid matte black colourways on each peripheral.”

When determining whether a bundle is worth picking up, I usually check the sum of the individual pieces. With all three items included, the Logitech MX Keys S Combo costs $29 less than if all three devices were purchased separately, which is a notable markdown. While the bundle I worked with was graphite-coloured, Logitech has also included the option for consumers to snag a crisp white colourway to add optionality.

The Logitech MX Keys S keyboard is a very low-profile board constructed with a single plate (unlike many mechanical variants) and feels much weightier than my normally preferred TKL keyboard types. The number pad is spaced nicely but somehow still tightly bound to the main keyboard body, and this gives just enough wiggle room for those with less desk real estate to turn in 360 degrees with one mouse swipe during a Valorant match.

Each key has a convex imprint to welcome fingertips every time you type a letter, and the sound is pleasant when storming through multiple ideas at once. While the keyboard does have heft to it (approximately 1.5 lbs), it’s lightweight enough to travel to multiple rooms after tucking it under an arm and holding multiple dishes at once for movie night. All-in-one trip adaptability is confirmed. The keyboard also comes equipped with six different backlighting options for users more sensitive to blaring lights coming at their keys.

The Logitech MX Master 3S mouse is a different beast. This silent assassin makes virtually no noise when you press the left or right click buttons, and while there is a traditional wheel down the middle of the mouse, there’s another included on the side for ease of use. Logitech knocked the feel of the Master 3S out of the park, as it feels as though the mouse is sculpted to each human hand that touches it, and it is fine-tailored for hand control. Wave ergonomics are included on the hindquarters of the mouse, which gives it a ‘sure’ grip, and rapid movement is almost encouraged.

Both items work incredibly well in tandem with a suite of devices, whether an iPad, a PC, or even a gaming console. I was able to hook both wireless items up to virtually any device I owned without breaking a sweat. The keyboard was able to hook up to a PS5 and Xbox Series X using the wireless transmitter seamlessly, and typing to friends during a Destiny 2 raid run or a friend on The Elder Scrolls Online to coordinate an adventure through the Gold Road is easier done than said.

Logitech has also included functionality with its Logi Options+ software.  Macro functions can be expanded on with the entire MX Keys S Combo here, and while this type of functionality is more reserved for ‘gamer’ keyboards, macro functionality included on a keyboard that appears ‘office formal’ is a mould breaker. When formatting an Excel sheet or editing anything in general, Smart Actions can be used to shorten the bridge between starting and getting a task done.

“The Logitech MX Keys S Combo is a great bundle option for those who could use a keyboard and mouse replacement on the fly.”

Personally, I mapped inserting a particular text box in Adobe Premiere (this can work with almost any function in editing software), and hitting the Smart Action went through the three steps (insert text, open editing panel, duration) needed to insert this particular edit. This is a nifty feature for sure, but it does require a new account sign-up to even gain access to these features, so that’s a small bummer.

The beautiful thing about the Logitech MX Keys S Combo is its functionality. Not only could the combo set connect to multiple devices, but I could switch between them on the fly. Using the three macro function keys located above where ‘Insert’ is normally located, I could control an iPad, switch to a PC, and switch to a gaming console, all without resetting settings. The MX Keys S Combo is a board for any storm, indeed.

The Logitech MX Keys S Combo is a great bundle option for those who could use a keyboard and mouse replacement on the fly. The wireless functionality of the combo makes it a cinch to hook up to multiple devices and switch without having to move your physical presence. The Smart Action features from Logi Options+ are also a big help for creatives, as they shorten the length of performing monotonous tasks that require more than one step.

Both devices are designed well and feel comfortable to use, but for a combo, it’s one of the pricier options on the market. The Logitech MX Keys S Combo is a bundle for those who want the best bundle without the bells and whistles of more premium options.
