Motorola Razr+ 2024

Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

Like many people who went to university in the early 2000s, the Motorola Razr was an iconic phone everyone seemed to have. It was the pinnacle of what mobile phones could do in an impossibly thin package. Now, with the advent of foldables, the Moto Razr has a chance to come back, and with this year’s Motorola Razr+, the company has built a device that feels refined, delivering an ideal throwback while also being one of the best foldable smartphones on the market.

The Moto Razr+ 2024 brings the classic Razr concept to the modern world, managing to feel like more than a gimmick, delivering a well-rounded foldable experience. The latest iteration refines many aspects and includes the latest specs you’d expect from a smartphone in 2024, creating a solid and balanced device that brings the right level of nostalgia.

Motorola Razr+ 2024 Smartphone Review

It’s surprising how reminiscent this revival is of the classic cellphone. So much so that if this year’s model didn’t have a stunning front display, you could be forgiven for mistaking it for a standard flip phone at first glance. This is by no means a criticism—Motorola has taken the time to craft a device that merges the classic with the new, and it’s stunning to unbox.

The Razr+ 2024 maintains the classic clamshell design that made the original Razr a cultural icon. However, it now boasts a larger 4-inch external display that stretches edge to edge, providing a more immersive experience when the phone is closed.

It features a volume rocker on the same side as the power button, which also doubles as a touch sensor. Despite issues with this type of fingerprint sensor in the past, the one on the Razr+ worked flawlessly during testing. This cover screen is not just for notifications; it’s a fully functional display capable of running most Android apps and even some games.

This attention to design goes deeper than appearances, with each aspect of the Motorola Razr+ 2024 feeling well thought out and ready for everything you’d want from a modern flagship smartphone in 2024. When unfolded, Motorola Razr+ users are greeted with a spacious 6.9-inch OLED main display featuring a 165Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling and animations.

The screen’s brightness has been improved, now reaching up to 1,400 nits, ensuring visibility even in bright sunlight. It looks fantastic both indoors and outdoors, with vibrant colours and deep blacks that make it a joy to use. From media to gaming, the Razr+ is a stunning offering that, despite its foldable concept, never feels like a compromised visual experience.

“When unfolded, Motorola Razr+ users are greeted with a spacious 6.9-inch OLED main display featuring a 165Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling and animations.”

If I have been too subtle up to this point, I am a fan of this phone, and part of that is due to how well-crafted the entire experience is. The phone’s build quality feels premium and solid in the hand, despite being a foldable, with a mix of aluminum, Gorilla Glass Victus, and vegan leather.

It’s available in several eye-catching colours, including Peach Fuzz, Midnight Blue, and a throwback Hot Pink that harkens back to the original Razr’s heyday. If you ever had a Razr back in the day, this one feels just as solid, with a level of refinement that makes it stand out and carve out a space for itself.

Samsung may have brought foldables to a mainstream audience, but their Galaxy Z Flip range, while one of the better foldables on the market, often feels compromised in some ways. I never felt that with the Motorola Razr+, thanks partly to the flagship-level specs under the hood. The Razr+ 2024 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

This configuration ensures smooth performance for everyday tasks and should handle more demanding applications with ease. I tested it with everything I normally use on a smartphone, including content creation software and games, and I never felt like I was struggling. The phone managed to be buttery smooth with everything I threw at it. Even games like Diablo Immortal and Genshin Impact felt fluid, delivering a solid gaming experience—provided the shockingly thin unfolded feel doesn’t hold you back.

I should mention, while the Motorola Razr+ is relatively small when folded and pocket-ready 170.83 x 73.95 x 6.99 mm; folded: 73.95 x 88.42 x 15.1 mm; weight: 6.65 oz or 188.5 g, it’s impressively sleek when unfolded. It never feels cheap, but as with anything this thin, I was initially worried about breaking it during gaming. It held up without issue, but if you’re someone who worries about bending your phone during an especially intense gaming session, this may not be the phone for you.

The device runs on Android 14 with Motorola’s minimal customizations. In all honesty, this is one of the least bloated versions of Android I have used in a while—next to the Pixel range, that is—and it works well here. The phone provides easy access to all the settings you may need, and the interface stays out of the way when you’re working. The company has promised three years of OS updates and four years of security patches, addressing concerns about long-term software support—something I’m always happy to see on a phone this pricey.

Unlike many foldable smartphones, the Motorola Razr+ doesn’t feel limited by its camera, delivering a solid overall experience where it matters. The main camera now features a 50-megapixel f/1.7, 24mm (wide) sensor with optical image stabilization, while a new 50-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom replaces the ultra-wide camera found on the previous model. It also features a 32 MP, f/2.4 (wide), 0.7µm selfie camera that delivers solid results, far better than I expected on a flip-style phone.

The shots from the rear cameras should be more than enough for most people’s social media and capturing memories. The images are sharp and clear, with enough detail to suit any typical need. The telephoto lens performs well, even if its zoom is limited. The 2x zoom is nice, though it falls short of some more camera-focused phones. I appreciated the colour reproduction on the Motorola Razr+, with shots delivering a vibrant yet true-to-life look that strikes a good balance between Samsung’s more oversaturated look and the more muted tones of other phones we’ve reviewed in the past.

Don’t get me wrong—the Motorola Razr+, while solid, does fall short of camera-focused flagship phones like the Google Pixel 9, the Xiaomi 14, and even the Samsung Galaxy S24. However, it delivered vibrant shots that look better than I’ve seen from other foldables, including the Z Fold6. Even if the Razr+ 2024’s cameras fall short of some flagships, they are more than capable for everyday photography and social media sharing.

Despite its size, the Razr+ even manages to deliver solid performance on the battery front. The device now houses a 3,800 mAh battery, and somehow, Motorola has managed to build this phone to last, even with heavy daily use. During testing, I saw the phone last well over 12 hours, even with gaming.

For those like me who are constantly out and about, this is great to see, as there’s nothing worse than the dreaded hunt for a plug when you arrive at a restaurant or coffee shop. If you do get low, the phone also supports 30W fast charging and 5W wireless charging, providing flexible power options if you ever push your luck a little too far.

The Razr+ 2024’s unique form factor offers both advantages and challenges. When closed, it’s compact and easily pocketable, reminiscent of the original Razr’s appeal. The large external display allows users to perform many tasks without opening the device, potentially saving battery life and reducing wear on the main screen’s hinge. While the screen isn’t huge, it allows you to do basic tasks relatively easily, including checking email or responding to messages.

“Honestly, having tested a range of foldables, Motorola has brought a lot to the table with the Razr+ 2024.”

However, the folding mechanism does introduce some compromises. The crease in the main display is still visible, though less pronounced than in earlier models. Some users may also find the phone’s thickness when folded to be bulkier than traditional smartphones, and I’ve already mentioned my concern about longevity, especially if you’re not the gentlest with your technology. But these are issues with any foldable, so while still present here, it’s not uniquely a Razr+ issue but something to be aware of.

The Motorola Razr+ 2024 is priced at $999.00 USD, positioning it as a premium device while still undercutting some of its foldable competitors. Honestly, having tested a range of foldables, Motorola has brought a lot to the table with the Razr+ 2024. It feels like a refinement of an already solid concept, sparking the right level of nostalgia without needing that crutch to stand out. Motorola has found a solid formula with this phone, and I’m amazed they managed to pull it off.

Motorola Razr+ 2024 Smartphone Review

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Motorola Razr+, or if it would stand on its own without nostalgia backing it up, but I’m pleased to see it delivered where it mattered most. Its fantastic external display, robust performance, and solid battery life address many of the shortcomings of foldables in the space. While it may not boast everything you’d expect in a modern flagship, it delivers a well-rounded offering that is more than adequate for the average user. The Motorola Razr+ 2024 offers a unique blend of nostalgia and modern features, delivering one of the best foldable experiences available in 2024.
