Shure MVX2U Digital Audio Interface

Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

The Shure MVX2U Gen 2 Digital Audio Interface is a compact, phantom-powered audio controller designed to create a simple, powerful XLR recording solution for your PC, Mac, or mobile device. Impressively compact and feature-rich, the MVX2U Gen 2 offers plug-and-play connectivity with up to 60 dB of gain, ideal for both condenser and dynamic microphones. As a single-channel XLR-to-USB audio controller, the MVX2U Gen 2 offers both capability and adaptability in a single, compact device.

Measuring just 3.25 inches and weighing 100g, the MVX2U Gen 2 fits comfortably in a front pocket. Literally a little wider than the diameter of an XLR connector, this compact digital audio interface is the smallest I’ve tested or worked with in my career. It’s as impressive a design as it is simple.

Examining the MVX2U Gen 2, its minimalistic design can leave you wondering at its capabilities. The one end houses the female XLR connection with quick release locking latch. A single green indicator light communicates whether the device is powered on.

“Where the MVX2U Gen 2 really shines is the customization of the experience, which is handled through Shure’s MOTIV software.”

The other end contains a single USB-C connector that doubles as a power and data port, providing power (no batteries or additional power required) and data to your recording device of choice. A single 3.5mm audio jack also provides onboard monitoring. Additionally, a single red LED indicates whether +48V phantom power is enabled.

That’s it. No dials, switches or additional hardware features. Yet once plugged in, the concern about capabilities quickly dissolves. The first noteworthy feature of the MVX2U Gen 2 is that it can absolutely be used as a plug-and-play audio interface without ever downloading the MOTIV software. The audio controller is preset with phantom power enabled, so any XLR mic will have no issue connecting and transmitting back to the recording device of choice.

This alone is a welcome feature, as many of the audio controllers I’ve tested require additional driver installs just to get them recognized by your system. The MVX2U Gen 2 is immediately recognized, with the PC and Mac tests showing it as another device that could be selected for capture. On my Poco F8 Ultra, I was immediately notified that a new USB device was ready to use, and when I selected it, I was taken to an audio settings page powered by Bose.

Out of the box, the audio capture is impressive. All tests were performed with the Shure MV7+, SM58 and Rode Podmic. The recording presented was clean, clear and representative of what I have come to expect of each of those mics, all of which I use on a fairly regular basis for podcasts and vocal recordings.

Where the MVX2U Gen 2 really shines is the customization of the experience, which is handled through Shure’s MOTIV software. There are three versions based on need: Desktop, Audio Mobile and Video Mobile, all of which take only a moment to download, install and set up. Once connected, the software immediately recognizes the MVX2U Gen 2 and grants access to its full feature set.

The built-in auto-level mode, which provides excellent, balanced capture, provides access to features such as the real–time Denoiser and what Shure calls the Popper Stopper, which is essentially a pop filter. Both worked quite well in testing, with the Denoiser doing a solid job of filtering much of the ambient noise here in the office.

“The MVX2U Gen 2 is an impressive piece of audio hardware and a piece worth having in your kit.”

This mode also provides an optional high-pass filter to clean up the low end, if needed, as well as a tone slider to capture brighter or warmer tones. Level adjustments for both the mic gain and monitoring are also controlled here, giving you full control over the experience. If that isn’t enough control, manual mode additionally offers a full EQ panel, more detailed mic gain control and compressor control. In testing all of these perform exceptionally well and can allow for true customization of the recording experience before ever hitting record.

What is most impressive, though, is that a fully featured single-channel digital audio controller in, perhaps, the most compact form factor I’ve ever worked with is $139.99. That is some serious value for money. For Streamers, content creators, and solo podcasters, the Shure MVX2U Gen 2 opens the door to a rich new world of audio capture, allowing you to connect higher-quality microphones without costly extras.

The MVX2U Gen 2 is an impressive piece of audio hardware and a piece worth having in your kit. Whether on the road or in a studio, this compact digital audio interface adds serious value to a setup without the need for additional bulky equipment. Providing impressive capture and equally impressive features, the Shure MVX2U Gen 2 is an excellent single-channel digital audio interface worth considering.
