Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

The Thypoch Simera-C 75mm T1.5 Lens, part of the impressive Simera-C cine series, is unique in the lineup. The fifth of five progressively longer focal lengths (21/28/35/50/75), the Simera-C 75mm offers a beautiful, rich, and detailed capture while maintaining the natural lighting in which the shot is captured. Able to leverage a longer focal length, the Simera-C 75mm provides filmmakers and photographers alike, new possibilities for their next creative project.

The largest in the Simera-C series, the 75mm weighs 475g, up from the 35mm’s 405g. Despite this weight difference, the 75 is still impressively compact and lightweight, ideal for those of us who prefer a smaller, lighter kit. Paired with the Sony A7R used for this review, the Simera-C 75mm fits well, not overwhelming the relatively small camera body.

Thypoch Simera-C 75Mm T1.5 Lens Review

Holding and using the Simera-C 75mm is, in a word, delightful. While I’ve worked with a few lenses that provide similar features and hardware as the Simera-C 75mm, this lens is by far the most compact and lightest. As a result, using it for day-to-day shooting is, as mentioned, delightful.

While compact and light, the Simera-C 75mm still manages to feel sturdy and durable when in use. This is imparted to the protruding teeth on the focus and aperture rings, which provide great grip points when in use. While I was admittedly a bit put off by the ring design when I first connected the lens, I’ve come to love the design. The larger, protruding grips make it exceptionally easy to identify where and which ring you are using without having to look away from the viewfinder. As a result, using the lens is smooth and frustration-free.

“Thanks to the smooth manual focus, the Simera-C 75mm can be fine-tuned to focus on a very specific element of the object of your photo.”

Speaking of smoothness, each ring glides quite seamlessly, allowing for easy focal and aperture adjustments without worry of jarring the camera. This is ideal when filming more dramatic shots that require focal shifts in the middle of the shot. In testing, it worked exceptionally well and provided the smooth and consistent experience I love to see in a quality lens.

Thypoch Simera-C 75Mm T1.5 Lens Review

The actual shots produced by the Simera-C 75mm, like the Simera-C 35mm I tested at the same time, are exceptional. While this is a cine first lens, the Simera-C 75mm is an excellent photography lens as well. It excels in a couple of areas in particular.

The first is the aperture settings. With a scale of T1.5 all the way to 16, the Simera-C 75mm is incredibly adaptable to a wide range of lighting conditions. For lower lighting settings, the Simera-C Series, across the board, can provide a constant T1.5 aperture, allowing an impressive amount of light into the shot. This allows for the leveraging of some pretty solid lower light settings for your photos of videos.

Expanding on the topic of lighting, the Simera-C 75mm does an incredible job of handling lighting in general. Even when access light is pushed through the lens, causing a flare, the light is still well contained with little to no stray light getting through to the sensor. As I discovered while shooting, this allows you to create some fun and unique shots that would blow out other lenses.

As with the Simera-C 35mm, the 75mm handle bokeh like a dream and provides impressively shallow depth of field if desired. Thanks to the smooth manual focus, the Simera-C 75mm can be fine-tuned to focus on a very specific element of the object of your photo. The lens I’ve tested in the Simera-C series simply excels at managing depth of field and lighting while still managing to capture incredible texture in every shot.

While every one of the prime lenses in the Simera-C series provides a different function for filming and photography, the Simera-C 75mm provides a beautiful and unique focal length that allows a photographer or cinematographer to capture a shot in a truly creative manner. From its well-designed and executed build to its rich and beautiful capture, the Simera-C 75mm is an excellent lens for your camera kit. Priced at $879.00, the Simera-C 75mm is a great secondary lens that will add a unique look and feel to your next film or photo series.
