I’ve been using the YUNZII C98 keyboard a while now, and it’s one of those keyboards that doesn’t go crazy with enthusiast features but still ends up being a solid daily driver. It’s a 96% layout, so you get the numpad without taking up all the space, and the build quality is the first thing that stands out. This board is beefy, with real weight behind it. The frame feels like it’ll survive more than a few accidental knocks…and it has.

I’ll be honest, I jumped on the YUNZII C98 Cute Cake Wireless Mechanical Keyboard because of how completely adorable it is. I didn’t really think about much else. YUNZII was kind enough to pair it with their YUNZII C1 Silicone Tri-Mode Wireless Custom Mouse, and it even came with an adorable cupcake mouse pad. I was fully set up. With hearts and flowers and an adorable little glowing face, I couldn’t resist. Even the dongle is hidden in a cute little paw, and it came with alternate keys for Mac users. Lucky for me, the keyboard turned out to be a pretty great device, one that will live on my desk full-time.

The typing experience is where the YUNZII C98 keyboard had me sold right away. The sound profile is creamy and soft, which I absolutely love. It’s comfortable, consistent, and easy to settle into for long sessions. My only ergonomic complaint is the angle — I wish it were tilted a bit more. It’s usable, but I found myself wanting just a touch more elevation. I actually 3D printed a mount to make it more angled, but because of the keyboard’s weight, it kept popping out.

A few design choices feel like misses. The biggest one is no volume knob. At this point, I think volume control should be standard on mid-range and enthusiast boards, and its absence is noticeable. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s one of those quality-of-life features that you immediately miss once you’re used to having it. The keyboard does come with shortcuts to do all of this—a combination of FN with the other F keys, but I miss my knob.

Connectivity has been pretty good. You get tri-mode wireless — Bluetooth 5.0 with three channels, 2.4 GHz, and wired USB-C. Switching between devices is quick, and pairing is painless. The only hiccup I ran into was Bluetooth occasionally disconnecting when my PC went to sleep. It always reconnected, but it happened enough times to be noticeable.

“It’s well-built, comfortable to type on, and offers enough customization to satisfy most users without requiring a deep dive into enthusiast-level tech.”

Lighting on the YUNZII C98 keyboard is fun to play around with. Per‑key customization lives under “Self Define” in the browser‑based software, which took me some time to find, but it gets the job done. You can tweak individual colours, set up effects, and even sync lighting to your PC’s audio. The side lighting adds a bit of ambient glow without turning your desk into a rave.

Battery life is… complicated. The battery itself lasts a long time — that part is great. Communicating how much battery is left is another story. I used the keyboard for a full week with the indicator refusing to budge from “full,” and then out of nowhere it dropped below 20%. No gradual decline, no warning, just a sudden drop. It’s not a functional problem, but it does make it harder to trust the battery readout. Luckily, I use it wired and was only using it wirelessly for a test.

Despite the quirks, the YUNZIIi C98 Purple is a pretty good keyboard. It’s well‑built, comfortable to type on, and offers enough customization to satisfy most users without requiring a deep dive into enthusiast‑level tech. It’s not trying to reinvent anything, and it doesn’t need to — it’s a good‑sounding keyboard with a few rough edges that are easy to overlook once you settle into using it.
