The upcoming Sekiro: No Defeat anime finally has a release date following a successful theatrical run in Japan, except it will be an eight-episode series, not a film, on Crunchyroll.
In case you missed it, Sekiro: No Defeat is an upcoming anime production based on FromSoftware’s 2019 Game of the Year, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The theatre-exclusive production was recently released in Japan as a ~2-hour-long film this month, but for everyone else, the animated version of Wolf’s journey won’t be available until January 2027. Instead of a theatrical runtime, the Sekiro anime will be reformatted into an eight-episode series on Crunchyroll, a decision the anime’s producer even recently apologized for.
In a comment on the official anime website, producer Tetsushi Suzuki apologized to fans for the confusion surrounding the two formats. He explained the theatrical run was an edited “preview” shown in theatres, and the Crunchyroll release will be an extended look at the entire story shown in the film release. In the eight-episode series coming to Crunchyroll streaming, Sekiro: No Defeat will include “scenes and cuts not included in the film,” and it will be released on a weekly basis, so fans will have to wait eight weeks to watch the entire series.
Interestingly enough, fans have taken issue with the streaming release announcement on forums like Reddit, considering the anime was reported to initially land in 2026. Fans are more upset about the delayed international release and how spoilers for the film are making the rounds on the internet, rather than the format change. Fans on the forum seem to all agree that the sporadic release schedule is “killing the hype.” Mostly, fans are upset that the Crunchyroll stream release is so far separated from the Japan-exclusive film, and this was not mentioned in the producer’s address to fans.
Sekiro: No Defeat was originally produced as an eight-episode series, and now it will be released as such sometime in January 2027 on Crunchyroll.
