Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

The REDMAGIC 12 Pro is a flagship-worthy contender in an already competitive premium smartphone market. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor, up to 16 GB of RAM, and up to 1 TB of storage, this latest iteration of the REDMAGIC Pro line is competitively priced to go head-to-head with some of the biggest names in the smartphone market.

From its iconic design to its gamer-first design philosophy, the REDMAGIC 12 Pro aims to raise the bar on what we should expect from a premium smartphone. The REDMAGIC 12 Pro, successor to the REDMAGIC 11 Pro, brings over many of the design elements that made the 11 Pro such a success, aiming to refine an already impressive hardware design. While the overall look is similar to last year’s model, the 12 Pro offers a few notable upgrades.

Physically, the 12 Pro is slightly thinner and lighter, measuring 163.03 × 75.96 × 8.55 mm and weighing 223 g. All while maintaining the look and feel of its predecessor. Many of the iconic REDMAGIC Pro features are present and accounted for, including the programmable RedMagic key located below the power button. Back as well are the two programmable shoulder bumpers, ideal for landscape mobile gaming.

The 12 Pro also features a robust and fully customizable LED system tied to both system function and aesthetics, similar to that of the 11 Pro. Finally, the squared-off edges, another iconic element of the REDMAGIC design, make a return in the 12 Pro. Interestingly, this is the one design feature that, while visually striking and helps the phone stand out in a crowd, practically isn’t as comfortable to use when gaming.

Finally, the premium transparent metal body is absolutely gorgeous, complementing the already unique look of the 12 Pro. The one small note, though, is that, while gorgeous, the metal body is a magnet for fingerprints. I often find myself wiping down the phone, though the inclusion of a transparent case does help minimize some of this.

Despite these small critiques, I absolutely love the overall design and look of the REDMAGIC 12 Pro. It’s nice to see a brand step out from the design standard and find small ways to create a unique look for what is essentially a rectangle at its core. On this front, REDMAGIC delivers with the REDMAGIC 12 Pro, with its Nightfreeze, Subzero, and Skyfrost (coming soon) variants, offering consumers some beautiful and sleek-looking phones to choose from.

While the exterior of the REDMAGIC 12 Pro resembles the 11 Pro in many regards, it’s the hardware upgrades that make the 12 Pro begin to stand out from its predecessor. The updated 6.85” BOE X11 OLED display is the first notable upgrade of note. A step up from last year’s BOE X10 AMOLED. While they share the same base resolution of 2,688 x 1,216 pixels, which translates to a 1.5K display, this new display boasts a beautiful 185Hz refresh rate vs. last year’s 144Hz.

“While all of the above hardware components help to produce an unparalleled immersive gaming experience, it’s REDMAGIC’s dedication to high-end processing and software integration that really helps the 12 Pro stand out.”

Having now used a 185Hz display since reviewing the POCO F9 Pro a couple of months back, it’s nice to see it on full display with the REDMAGIC 12 Pro’s larger screen. I also appreciate how crisp and bright the display is. The colour depth and image sharpness are some of the best I’ve tested on an Android device. Gaming and content viewing on the 12 Pro is absolutely gorgeous. Speaking to the gamer-first design philosophy, the OLED’s touch response is impressively quick and is rated for up to 5,000 Hz instant touch sampling. In-game tests, I found the screen’s touch response to be incredibly smooth, precise and lightning-fast. Even with my larger thumbs mashing the screen, it translated it all into clean, fluid responses onscreen.

The other element of the screen’s design that pushes this impressive touch sampling rate is the inclusion of a dedicated Synaptics touch chip designed specifically to manage the touch sampling rate on screen. This works in conjunction with the OLED’s 185Hz refresh, vibrant and crystal-clear image projection and impressively thin bezel to produce a beautiful and immersive gaming experience.

To further amplify the immersive experience, REDMAGIC has included an 0815 X-axis linear motor responsible for producing haptic feedback while gaming. This is a feature I’ve not really seen outside the REDMAGIC brand, with my first experience being with the REDMAGIC 10S Pro, another solid entry from the company. The experience has only improved with each iteration, and the 12 Pro offers the best version of the system I’ve tested to date.

While the audio system does provide a fairly well-rounded and clear audio profile for both gaming and music, I was a bit disappointed in the overall max volume that was produced by the 12 Pro. For clarity, the mix is actually quite good, especially for a smartphone; it simply lacked the power and, by extension, the volume to really stand out from the many other excellent premium phones on the market.

While all of the above hardware components help to produce an unparalleled immersive gaming experience, it’s REDMAGIC’s dedication to high-end processing and software integration that really helps the 12 Pro stand out. The new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 Processor packs a serious punch. Constructed around a 2+4-core Qualcomm Oryon CPU and the Adreno GPU, the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor is a powerhouse of performance.

The two primary cores clock in at up to 5 GHz, which, when tested with Geekbench 6, produced some excellent results. Single-core scores came in at 3858, while the multi-core scores produced a whopping 11329, putting it neck and neck with the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. Interestingly, the GPU scores for the REDMAGIC 12 Pro surpassed the Galaxy S26 Ultra, coming in at a GPU OpenCL score of 35131 compared to the latter’s 23,260. These results, once again, speak to REDMAGIC’s dedication to gaming first in the 12 Pro’s design.

While there are three available options for RAM and storage, the unit sent over for review offers 16GB of RAM (up to 12GB Extended RAM) and 512GB of storage (a 1TB variant is also available). When paired with the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and the newest RedCore R5 dedicated gaming chip (a staple for the REDMAGIC phones), it’s easy to see why things like GPU scores lean so much in favour of the 12 Pro.

The RedCore R5 chip not only optimizes touch controls, as noted previously, but also provides dedicated processing power for rendering, 2K super resolution, and frame generation. Dedicated hardware for gaming does make a huge difference in the overall experience, and REDMAGIC is all in on providing the best mobile gaming experience possible.   In testing, I have been blown away by the gaming experience on the REDMAGIC 12 Pro. Diablo Immortal runs at 60FPS at the highest settings possible on mobile without even straining the hardware, a feat I’ve not seen on any previous phones I’ve tested. Visuals are crisp, fluid and vibrant, creating the best mobile gaming experience I’ve had.

Shooters like Destiny Rising fared just as well, providing some of the smoothest gaming I’ve tested. Even when running the title at max settings, performance is consistent. While I’ve used other brands’ game management software previously, I’ve come to appreciate how robust and powerful REDMAGIC’s Energy Cube software is. This latest iteration, Energy Cube 4.0, is a delight to use, offering full control of the system’s hardware while it seamlessly balances all of the components to produce the most consistent and visually stunning gaming experience possible.

More impressive still is the 12 Pro’s built-in gaming output features. Thanks to the inclusion of a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, content can be output to a 4K monitor, and the aforementioned gaming software overlays make connecting a controller or keyboard/mouse a seamless process. This allows you to quickly turn your mobile gaming into a full-fledged console-like experience. Thanks to these built-in features, I was able to quickly set up a gaming station here in the office and enjoyed a couple of hours of gaming with my SteelSeries Aeon Pro controller while playing Destiny Rising on my 4K monitor.

“In stress tests, the system works exceptionally well, keeping the 12 Pro cool to the touch even after prolonged stress cycles.”

Another aspect of the REDMAGIC 12 Pro’s design that helps create this premium performance experience is the AquaCore Cooling system. It is, bar none, the most robust and efficient cooling system I’ve tested on a smartphone. While elements of the system such as the liquid Metal heat sink, advanced VC heat distribution system, and TurboFan have previously been a part of the AquaCore Cooling system, this latest iteration has seen some refinements to each element.

cgm redmagic pro 12 review 3

A new feature to the cooling system, though, is the introduction of a dual-loop liquid cooling system. This closed-loop liquid cooling system cycles liquid over key heat-generating components and quickly dissipates the heat, leaving the system running cool even when under heavy load. It’s a fascinating implementation of liquid cooling and a serious upgrade of the 11 Pro’s single-loop system.

In stress tests, the system works exceptionally well, keeping the 12 Pro cool to the touch even after prolonged stress cycles. While it’s worth noting that when under heavy load there is a slight fan noise, it is considerably quieter than I initially assumed it would be, considering that it is rated for 25,500 RPMs when running at full speed. As for productivity, the 12 Pro is a productivity monster. While the hardware obviously contributes to this experience, it’s actually the REDMAGIC OS12 that was most impressive during testing. It’s incredibly stable, running on top of Android 17, and provides some incredible quality-of-life, AI-driven support to make work more efficient.

Interestingly, I found things like the Call assistant, which seamlessly created subtitles live while I was on a call, something I never thought I would need, to be incredibly helpful throughout the workday. The live translator application, likewise, was a slick and powerful tool that worked exceptionally well in testing. As someone who travels abroad fairly regularly, this is a game changer for ordering coffee around the world!

cgm redmagic pro 12 review 9

While this is all amazing and produces some of the fastest speeds and best gaming performance I’ve tested, it does bring into question power requirements and battery life. On this front, REDMAGIC continues to impress. With an 8,400 mAh battery onboard, coupled with the surprisingly efficient processor and GPU, I’ve had no issues getting through long days with plenty of battery left for the next day. In testing, even with just over three hours of heavy gaming and roughly 6 hours of content viewing, the 12 Pro still had plenty of battery for a full day of work the next day.

“The REDMAGIC 12 Pro is a stellar phone that aims to be the best gaming phone on the market, and it delivers on that promise.”

For those still concerned, the REDMAGIC 12 Pro also features 80W wired and wireless fast charging (unfortunately, I didn’t have a wireless fast charger to test the latter). This easily brought the phone from zero to 100% in just over 45 minutes. For those needing it, there is also support for two-way reverse charging, which is a new feature for REDMAGIC phones.

The final area of testing for the REDMAGIC 12 Pro is camera performance. This is the one area that has probably seen the least amount of updating from the previous generation. It features the same 16MP front camera and 50 +50MP rear cameras. I have no critique of the cameras specifically, as they take solid pictures and beautiful video up to 8K30, though more impressive are the 4K120 and 4K60 with stabilization.

Image capture, as seen in the image samples, is crisp, clean and colourful. The enhanced AI algorithm present in the 12 Pro absolutely helps generate the best version of the image, notably handling low-light situations exceptionally well. If you are looking for a camera that will make every shot look great and provide a point-and-shoot experience, the REDMAGIC 12 Pro delivers.

The REDMAGIC 12 Pro is a stellar phone that aims to be the best gaming phone on the market, and it delivers on that promise. From hardware to construction, the 12 Pro is a flagship phone that can go toe to toe with the biggest brands in smartphones. If you are looking for a truly unique, premium smartphone experience, the REDMAGIC 12 Pro is a worthy of consideration.
