Fans have been anticipating more info on the Magic: The Gathering Reality Fracture set, and today WOTC unleashed a reveal of new cards, mechanics and artwork.
Wizards of the Coast slammed the internet with yet another preview drop of Magic: The Gathering Reality Fracture, and like the multi-teaser releases of recent sets such as Magic: The Gathering The Hobbit, they’ve revealed new cards, characters, and showcase treatments coming to the tabletops of MTG. For the last full in-universe set expansion of MTG of 2026, it will feature a myriad of new and returning keywords, alongside fresh mechanics for fans of the TCG to unleash onto tabletops.
In Reality Fracture, the Magic: The Gathering protagonist (and planeswalker) Jace Beleren returns as The Theorist, and he hoists a new version of the multiverse onto the planes of MTG, the Echoverse. The Echoverse is the answer to the question: What if there were no Phyrexian invasion, Eldrazi corruption, or Bolas? Reality Fracture continues the overarching MTG story where Secrets of Strixhaven concludes, and it will feature a Jace Beleren who set up his base of operations in Hexhaven, a multi-versal version of Strixhaven that features flipped magical college colours, and he is now called The Theorist.
The Theorist started as Jace Beleren, and in the recreation of the multiverse, turned into an amalgamation of the multiple Jace’s worse traits magnified, without any of the empathy that made that amalgamation a leader. In Reality Fracture, Jace Beleren is the heel, and the Echoverse contains a reproduction of every plane from the Multiverse, except for the components The Theorist deemed too evil. Magic: The Gathering – New Mechanics & Sphinxes in Reality Fracture
- Jace Planeswalker Tokens – For the first time in Magic: The Gathering there will be planeswalker tokens, and in the visage of The Theorist, Jace. This token is created when “empower Jace X” occurs, and there’s no existing Jace planeswalker token you control. This is similar to The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit‘s Amass Orcs X, where if no army exists an Orc Army 0/0 appears, but instead a planeswalker with 0 loyalty counters.
- Empower Jace X – When a card empowers Jace, you put X loyalty counters on a Jace token you control. If you don’t control a Jace planeswalker token, you first create one, then empower Jace X.
- Heartwood & Lotus tokens – New mana rock tokens that provide more mana when crafted, powerful additions for Reality Fracture.
- Flipped card variants – The main draw for Reality Fracture is to deploy new twists on some of the most beloved cards in MTG history, and they’ve done that with some of the Lorwyn five original planeswalkers, but they’ve also converted a few other legendary creatures, like Ixalan’s Ghalta, who is reimagined as a toughness matters card from its normal hulking Tyrannosaurus stature. Both new Ghalta variants (and new Karn variants have been spoiled above), alongside a green-take on the Phyrexian Obliterator/Vindicator can be seen below.
Last but not least, Reality Fracture‘s new Hexhaven has five new class heads, and instead of Elder Dragons, they’re Elder Sphinxes born from Jace’s insecurities and each highlighting a school in Hexhaven. Very much like a former bully of his being turned into a now more helpful student (check Repurposed Enforcer), these Sphinx embody each school and their effects reflect the ethos of learning each class exhibits.
With many cards in the set, and the product list revealed, WOTC has also revealed a price point for each product coming to the Magic: The Gathering Reality Fracture (and these prices are reduced from the previous Universe’s Beyond The Hobbit set).
