Late last night, Apple unveiled their latest MacBook Pro with new M3 Pro & M3 Max chips, and the MacBook launches at a reduced rate although it is more powerful.

The new MacBooks deploy with the M3 Pro and M3 Max chipsets with next-generation GPU architecture and a faster CPU. It is notable that the new MacBook Pro lineup does not come with a redesign, all of the upgrades are internal. At the launch event, Apple said the chipset upgrades are “significant” while comparing them to a faster version of the Intel-based Macs that were phased out in 2020. The new internal architecture claims to deliver better battery, better speed, and more juice to develop and power AI applications. Below are the three new chipsets present in Macs and the MacBook Pro, and their core differences.

Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus said “There is nothing quite like MacBook Pro. With the remarkable power-efficient performance of Apple silicon, up to 22 hours of battery life, a stunning Liquid Retina XDR display, and advanced connectivity, MacBook Pro empowers users to do their life’s best work,” with “With the next generation of M3 chips, we’re raising the bar yet again for what a pro laptop can do.” One of the key features of the M3 chipset is Dynamic Caching, a process that has the GPU allocate the use of local memory in Mac hardware in real-time, so only the exact amount of memory required is used for each task. Also, the new MacBook Pro comes in two display size options, 14″ and 16″ to fit the user preference.

All three new chipsets presented by Apple can deploy in both MacBook Pro sizes. The M3 Pro and M3 Max laptops come in a sleek new colourway, Space Black. For those who like to game on their MacBook, the upgraded macOS Sonoma allows users to toggle a ‘game mode’ setting, that prioritizes graphics and low latency to deliver a more immersive experience. The new M3 chipsets can handle some of the more power-centric releases for the year as well including Lies of P, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Alan Wake 2 without breaking a sweat. It’s worth mentioning the new Apple line of laptops has effectively removed the Touch Bar.

With all of the power upgrades, the MacBook Pro line has also received a notable launch price cut. The previous Mac Book Pro 14″ with M2 chipset launched at a starting price of $1,999 USD, and this generation is less. Below are the price points for the new MacBooks with M3 chipset.

  • The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 starts at $1,999 USD
  • The 16‑inch MacBook Pro with M3 Pro starts at $2,499 USD
  • There are also option choices, including the option to add memory, increased core functionality and more at an increased price.
  • The M3 Max configurations will be announced at an undisclosed date later in November.

The new MacBook Pro line with M3 chipset can be preordered straight from Apple, with an official release right around the corner of November 7. Fans can preorder, and find more information on the new laptops from their website.
