Bioware: Once you go Old Republic, you never go back

Bioware’s founders say you won’t want to play any other MMO after you’ve had a taste of Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Bioware’s forthcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic (TOR) is an MMORPG, so the comparisons to Blizzard’s World of Warcraft are inevitable. However, the good doctors that founded the Edmonton-based development house are perfectly fine with those expectations. According to Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, the response from TOR testers has been phenomenal, and anybody that gets a taste of TOR won’t want to return to any other MMO, including WoW.

“The reaction that we’ve had, and a lot of people playing it have had… is that frankly once you’ve tried it, you just can’t go back,” said Muzyka. “You don’t want to try other MMOs anymore.”

For Muzyka, TOR stands apart from other MMOs because it gives players a “sense of heroic purpose and identity.”

“I think WoW and all the other MMOs, they have the same sort of challenge… There are thousands and thousands of heroes,” added Zeschuk. “You don’t really feel special. It’s an amazing experience, and it’s really rewarding and fun, but you just don’t feel special. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

Of course, the doctors know that it would be foolhardy to stray too far from Blizzard’s incredibly successful blueprint, so while they say that TOR will have a distinct Bioware imprint, the game will incorporate the standard gameplay elements that people expect from the genre.

“We’ve got the best-of-breed features from other MMOs, progression, exploration, customization, combat,” explains Muzkyka. “Once you’ve tried it, there’s no looking back. You really want to keep playing that new approach to MMOs, I think, is really refreshing.”
