After many months with no update, yesterday EA decided to shutter Cliffhanger Games cancelling its Black Panther title along with it, and today we have some details surrounding the cancelled title.
Yesterday, an IGN report hit the internet announcing EA has officially cancelled their Black Panther game and has effectively closed down Cliffhanger Games with it. The report was derived from an internal email sent to staff from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele, and the president said the ongoing cancellations and studio closures are being done to sharpen the company’s focus and to use that focus to put creative energy behind more significant opportunities for growth.

EA’s Black Panther from Cliffhanger Games was announced way back in July 2023, and since then EA has remained virtually silent regarding development since the initial announcement (aside from a few developer updates that assured the game was still alive). Cliffhanger Games was introduced then as a fledging studio with talent from more established studios that have worked on massive AAA hits like Shadow of Mordor, Halo Infinite and God of War. In the same cancellation and studio closure email, President Miele said EA remains focused on a small handful of franchises going forward (Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends).
Following Cliffhanger Games’ closure and the title cancellation, EA staff and others who worked on the game have come out in support of the fallen title. Concept Artist Karla Ortiz expressed condolences to the team on BlueSky, saying “I was a part of this incredible crew. We were working on such an amazing and stunning game. Detailed, rich, beautiful. It breaks my heart the world wont see it.”
Today, details have come out regarding the now-cancelled EA Black Panther title. X (formerly Twitter) user, @notfunEman has revealed (currently unconfirmed) details regarding the upcoming title in posts to the site. The user says “This Black Panther game was going to have you play as Tchalla’s son and also include the skrulls as antagonists” in a post. The post includes alleged concept art from Cliffhanger Games, citing an early survey held by EA on the now-cancelled title, and that post can be seen below.
When Black Panther was announced, Game Director Kevin Stephens (Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War) said “We want our game to enable players to feel what it’s like to be worthy of the Black Panther mantle in unique, story-driven ways, and we want Cliffhanger Games to empower everyone on our team as we collaborate to bring this amazing world to life,” in high hopes for the title.
With the cancellation of Black Panther at EA, the company assures fans Motive’s Iron Man is still in the works, as well as the third Star Wars: Jedi title despite the cuts to Cliffhanger Games. Fans looking to get a Black Panther fix will have to wait for Marvel1943: Rise Of Hydra, which has recently been delayed into 2026.
