Fan Expo 2021 Goes In-Person With Measures

Fan Expo Canada is returning to an in-person event at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in October 2021.

Guests and pop culture fans can roam the halls for the first time since 2019. But things aren’t the same as usual, with Fan Expo holding a much more limited event. The new rules follow Ontario’s reopening guidelines, starting with proof of vaccination. Other measures enforce social distancing for a limited number of in-person guests. The venue’s larger halls are also being expanded to maintain space.

The 2021 edition is still a step-up, following last year’s cancellation because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Smaller, digital events and merchandise were still available on the event’s site. But the traditional in-person event featuring panels, celebrity meets and cosplay shows were cancelled as Ontario battled a growing number of COVID-19 cases. The traditional event also resulted in wide ticket refunds for early bird purchases.

Organizers for this year’s Fan Expo shared their guidelines on their website and to digital-only ticket holders over email.

“If this is not for you, we completely understand,” event organizers wrote, adding the window for 2021 ticket refunds is extended until October 13. Tickets are also limited, with on-site box offices unavailable this year as part of the event’s safety measures.

Guests who manage to snag the limited online tickets are required to show their proof of vaccination for two doses. They will also need to wear a mask, while those aged two and under aren’t required. The social distancing measures are also enforced with wider open venue space. Celebrity meets, and photo ops are also divided by plexiglass.

Panels and other special Fan Expo stage events are also making a comeback this year. But audiences will have to stand and seats will not be available. According to organizers, this lets more guests see their favourite events. Guests can also access the food court and remove their masks at available tables.

The Metro Toronto Convention Centre continues to host the Fan Expo event in its North and South halls. But the connecting bridge will be closed off for guests this year. Visitors will instead have to exit either building to access the other.

The Limited Edition Fan Expo Canada is being held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from October 22 to 24. Day One starts on Friday from 4PM to 9PM. Then Saturday from 10AM to 8PM. Finally, on Sunday, from 10AM to 5PM.
