Final Fantasy Resonance Teases Story Details & Completionist Challenges

With two months to go before the release of Final Fantasy Resonance, the first HD-2D game in the storied franchise, Square Enix has released further teases on the characters and factions of the world, as well as some of the endgame challenges that await aspiring completionists.

Final Fantasy Resonance is an offline adaptation of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius‘ first story arc, fully reimagining it as a standalone console RPG. Throughout its story, newcomers and Brave Exvius alumni alike will visit the nation of Zoldaad, home of the Fire Crystal and an expanding, magitek-enhanced military that grows ever more tyrannical. Here they will meet Jake, leader of a rebellion against the Zoldaad Empire, and recruit his gambler-esque skills to their cause.

The journey will also take players to the mystical nation of Mysidia. This “magiapolis” is believed to be the stuff of legends, and thought by some to have fallen into ruin long ago. It’s also the home of the Ice Crystal, and an equally enigmatic mage named Sakura who seems wiser than her young appearance may suggest. Protagonists Rain and Lasswell will need all the help they can get against the Sworn Six—fearsome warriors, such as the Veritas of the Earth, who seek to destroy the crystals.

Of course, the flashiest help available in Final Fantasy Resonance are its Visions, the crystallized essences of famous heroes. With this system, Final Fantasy protagonists can be equipped to heroes to lend their abilities, and summoned with special summon-style attacks called Resonances, where they spring to life in full 3D. The official Final Fantasy YouTube page has been showcasing these summons, such as Lightning or Noctis, in the leadup to the game’s release. Other original characters, such as Sakura’s apprentice Akaya, will also be available as Visions, while traditional summon creatures called Espers will also be available.

True to its classic JRPG inspiration, Final Fantasy Resonance will also feature considerable side content to entice completionists. Special threats await in caves around the world, who drop magicite when defeated—a limited and vital resource used to upgrade Visions. Next up the challenge ladder are optional dungeons where fearsome (and possibly familiar) monsters wait to test your mettle, building up to the ultimate encounter… with the Ultima Weapon. And if that series tradition isn’t enough, the infamous swordsman Gilgamesh will also show his face at multiple times throughout the story.

With so many allusions to series history, a fresh visual style, and a reinvigorated story, it seems Final Fantasy Resonance will have something to offer JRPG enthusiasts of all stripes when it launches on all platforms October 22, 2026. A Digital Deluxe edition featuring unique cosmetic and early boost items is available for preorder, while further preorder bonuses will be unlocked for those who preorder digitally or at participating physical retailers.
