GDC Announces Return on August 4 with Summer Convention

Organizers for the Game Developers Conference (GDC) revealed a replacement event for its traditional one following cancellations from COVID-19.

On their site, its upcoming GDC Summer will take place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco and brings guests together in a new lineup of events. The three-day event from August 4 to 6 also helps “developers to get up to speed on advances in the field” while making up for lost time in “freestyle” presentations on the showroom floor.

The summer event continues the annual event’s tradition of an in-person convention and hopes to bring back an inclusive experience with major companies after a majority withdrew last month. The COVID-19 concerns eventually prompted organizers to postpone the original event, moving over to its Virtual events offered for free on Twitch.

The announcement also marks the GDC as an event to set a return after others including PAX East, SXSW and E3 2020 cancelled their own dates. While its sequel event will be shorter, GDC Summer promises to bring spaces for fireside conversations, career workshops and other networking opportunities with a revised lineup.

Early-bird passes are available until July 10, while regular and on-site passes will be offered closer the event’s launch in August.
