UPDATE: GDC organizers postpone event after majority of partners withdraw from coronavirus concerns 2

An update from the Game Developers Conference website confirms the annual event is postponed due to risks around coronavirus (COVID-19).

“After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March,” the letter wrote.

The page also thanked guests and partners for their interest while more information is expected “in the coming weeks.”

GDC’s news follows a string of cancellations from Microsoft, Sony, Facebook and other leading developers who planned to return with game reveals and other panels in San Francisco.

Since last week, each company also posted their own statements in not attending as the coronavirus posed a risk for development teams and partners from around the world.

The event’s schedule eventually shrunk even as organizers stated GDC 2020 would continue on as planned.

Boston’s own annual PAX East also saw less visitors, leading to more studios pulling out of the lineup including Capcom and Kojima Productions.

The next scheduled GDC 2020 dates are unknown and guests won’t be able to attend the event, originally slated for the week of March 16-20.

COVID-19 has a total of over 83,000 cases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Its latest situation report tallied 1358 new cases around the globe while 54 new deaths were confirmed.
